  • I don't think its a genre but I really go out of my way for songs that really play with the stereo soundscape. Mad respect to the producers that can unironically create a song that can shake the "deep seat" of my brain ( I dunno what to call it but conceptually its a core part of my sensory stability) Asymmetric soundscapes can get awkward really fast but producers that make it not awkward are auditory gods/goddesses

one good example of what I mean is the "8D" versions of some songs on youtube. But those lose points for originally being a straight symmetry soundscape manipulated to be asymmetric. -- of course it will be easier to balance if you just alternate evenly between left/right.

I would love to see if there is a song that was originally made to play with the 3d soundscape originally.

Wild, I didn't know this 8D stuff existed.

It reminds me of an interlude on a Tool album called (-)Ions (skip the first minute). On headphones it really does mess with your head a bit.

I guess a (slightly!) more developed version of that idea can be found on Loscil's Gymnote (really, the whole album Submers plays with extreme stereo as an expression of depth I guess):

Also, given that disorientating pulsing is like the backbone of glitch, a lot of musicians within that genre utilise asymmetric soundscapes.

For example, the percussive backbone of this track bounces all over the fuckin place:

It's like being in a room with a million ping pong balls flying off in all directions, absolutely addictive shit to me :angryr:

Probably the most amusing example I can think of of this sort of thing tho is the intro to the song Trapped In Three Dimensions, where El-P raps inscrutable nonsense on the left channel and K-Mart (I think) just recites Godflesh song titles on the right for like a minute and a half:
