Does critics' review affect the way you feel about songs?

  • Did you ever change your opinion about a song just because it got a high or a low rating from critics?

  • Nope. I think when I was first getting into music, I took critics seriously, but it didn't take me long to realise that most of them were just kids fresh out of college with no particular affinity for music who are doing their first writing gig before either:

    1. starting a career in PR, or;

    2. getting a "real" journalism position.

The ones that do it long-term (like Simon Reynolds and Pierro Scaruffi) are rare.

And even then, music is such a personal thing that all you're really getting is an insight into one person's quirks and preferences. And they most probably will not align with yours.

My primarily love is a lot of slow and quiet music that always gets bad reviews for being slow and quiet even though that was the point. Niche music is never going to find a critic who even understands the history and context to rate it fairly.

And it's only gotten worse with sites that want to solidify themselves as "tastemakers", attempting to form an early consensus and build narratives around albums. I really resent this and find it detrimental to music as a whole.

  • no, I have my own, grounded opinions

sometimes I even disagree with praise for my faves (even though I praise the work in question myself) if I feel that the author took a wrong, ignorant approach

  • i agree with everything you said. music is very personal and i recent all these critic sites as well as their readers for trying to push certain narratives about music and how much this promotes sheep mentality and discounts individuality.

  • no. if I like it, I like it. No offence to Twice, but their songs ain't my style. So despite the high critics rating, still not interested.

  • No. If I like a song I'll like it even if others say it's bad, be it a normal person or a critic.

Same if I don't like it.

  • Nah not really. If I don’t like a song, I just don’t like it. Although I do acknowledge and respect songs with high critics review

  • No. It does affect me when it comes to movies though. I don't have the time to watch everything, so I have to be more selective somehow.

  • I've actually had conversations on this forum with people who were trying to justify their faves music as good because the critics said it was good which really pissed me off , like music critics are high and mighty compared to the average music fan , and I was pretty sure this was just because the critics were at the time praising those people's faves so I wanna see if they change narrative now that the critics said there were at least two groups with "better music" than them.

And anyways even if the critics hipotetically should hate something I enjoy I am still gonna enjoy it.

  • Nope. I never even check them out

All this confidence over just 4 reviews??? :pepe-life-support:

Do you even know how metacritic scores work??

  • Yes, if my faves were rated high

    Twice is love <3

  • no, if i think a song is shit, no matter how many stars it gets in reviews or how many streams it has, it's still shit

  • No, pretty sure all big music critics are sellout for publicity reasons plus journalists are the scum of the earth as we all know.

  • I lost faith in critics (be it in music, film or any type of art) when they gave one of the best movies, a criminally low rating. It was just unacceptable.

And also, Many people here do this... definitely.

  • I love Zimzalabim, wolf, Signal, Umpah Umpah.
