If it's a one shot avoid long descriptions of places, I'd suggest you start with an action scene or a dialogue, it'll help get the plot going

If it's a normal short story I suggest you follow the basic plot sequence: exposition, rising action, climax, falling action then resolution

As for tropes, it depends on your story idea

Just don't write a Mary sue or a John doe and it shall be fun
