There were some other post (can’t find them now)

Basically the industry ain’t making no money, 3rd gen is dying/disbanding and 4th gen ain’t making no noise and are flopping digitally, album sales are higher but even then the idols themselves aren’t making much money! And with the expenses these groups have even the album sales aren’t sufficient.

And of course with touring not happening right now, an even bigger chunk of revenue is cut, offline concerts are only possibly or profitable for groups with large enough fan bases, but you can’t keep doing them back-to-back like a regular tour!

  • Smaller companies and artists will take the hit mostly, unless a group is really popular or has a hit with the gp. I think groups from the big 4 will be just fine. Bound to happen when the industry is so oversaturated, unfortunately.

  • No, many articles about this has been popping up lately!

they're ignoring how idols literally made dirt in second gen off of digitals and if they're honestly saying boy groups that hit 700k album sales and more is not making anything, they are delusional.

yes the industry took a hit from covid, but that's because they weren't able to tour. literally everyone else also got hit with that.

this is a massive overreaction to say it's sinking, and it's clear as day they do not know where kpop gets it's money from if it's saying album sales and tours don't mean shit but digital does lmao

  • this should be rather about the fact that corona has taken some possibilities to earn money?

+ some labels decided to postpone new group debuts, which in my opinion is even worse because now they need to spend money on accommodation, food, dance/vocal lessons, and they don't have any income... if they would just debut group then at least they would get money from sold albums/digitals, or they could do some online concert...

  • 2020 was a singular year for many industries. In my opinion, what's holding back "4th" generation groups from booming are the current 3rd generation groups. K-pop is a niche. After they phase out, 4th generation groups will be free to grow. And we still don't know if the major 3rd generation groups will disband soon or not.

But this industry has always been about the big ones. That are many small and unknown groups that will never see the light of the day. 76 debuts in 2020. No way all 76 can become famous.

  • I think what it means is on top of Covid

that the idol industry is becoming too over saturated and smaller companies which can't tour or partake in festivals are not profiting as much

  • I can see what the concerns are, festival and other performances are how most groups make money. Unless you’re regularly selling 100,000+ per album most groups are probably losing money or just breaking even. And it looks like next summer (and festival season) will be a write off too.
