  • I know that South Koreas population will highly decrease but this is no freakin way to change it...

government should work on some policy for example 1000 USD per month for family when the second child is born.

Changed the title of the thread from “Korean City Faces Massive Criticism For Its “Transnational Marriage Project,” Setting Up Old Single Men With Young International Students From Vietnam” to “Shocking! Korean City Asks Vietnamese Students to Marry Older, Single Men to Increase Population”.

Has any country in the world succeeded with birthrate increasing campaign?

  • they're kidnapping viet women (and as well as women from neighboring countries) and sending them to china to deal with their declining birthrate and gender imbalance. Its sad. The good thing about the SK situation is consent but its simply a bandaid, not a real solution. the SK government is too afraid to address the real problem of inequality and making the living situation better to where people can feel comfortable having kids.

  • Yeah, this situation was going on for a while. There is a genre unbalance in some generations where male-to-female ratio is pretty bad (due to super effective child control measures) and they also tend to be more conservative in relation to family values and not want a career woman as a bride.

Has any country in the world succeeded with birthrate increasing campaign?

Nope. Unless countries adopt such policies very early on like France or Norway. Still they are below the magical 2.1 and it seems in France some decline will be expected due to economy hardship and coronavirus (which affected everyone to be fair). France still have the Francosphere to gather immigrants if needed. This is another problem as immigration causes brain drain in these nations that desperate need specialized workforce to escape lack of development and it is a can of worms for nationalists.

Birthrates have a point of non-return and population decline can't be avoided. It is still to be seen if it will be effective for the future generations in the long term.

They are adopting similar policies to Singapore very recently. It's a little too late to be truth and like Japan it is starting rather timid. However, the decline can't be avoided judging from Singapore's results. Maybe in a couple generations it may improve a bit and then they can work on a proper recover. I think they still need to adopt policies that incentivize balancing having family and career and changing working culture to improve the chances in the really long term. However, the gap from such decline can't be changed with any policy for various reasons.

The only real remedy would be immigration and pretty sure they will not take this pill in such scale. Adopting "bride immigration" is fine for such electorate. Maybe they could repatriate Koreans living in diaspora with incentives although even this can cause alienation.

Another alternative would be technology. Lot of Koreans are freezing their eggs and sperms. These nations could jumpstart birth in vitro style technology and automatized child rearing in a massive scale if the situation becomes desperate. It sounds super dystopian, but I think this technology would be needed to colonize the stars anyway. I imagine China would adopt this in a heartbeat.

  • If you read the article, the issue resides mainly in agricultural communities. Girls flee from rigorous farmer/fisher's wife lifestyle to the city thus, men are left single.

Vietnamese women, deceived by K-dramas, married to Korean men wishing good comfortable lives and not prepared for what to come.

For a higher birth/marriage rate, a big cultural shift is needed so less burden is levied on the wife's shoulders but, that will take ages if ever.

Yeah, it's not just with Vietnamese brides to be who seek better future for themselves. You see this type of bleeding everywhere for the same reasons. K-drama may make Koreans more attractive option, but it doesn't matter much.

Not sure what can be done for these rural communities. Maybe have better infrastructure so they don't need to move to urban areas to look for better opportunities would be ideal, but life is just restrictive in such environments as of now and always has been.

For birth rate, the only shift that can truly reverse it would be halting urbanization or redesign urban environment. Modern urban life is simply not suited for that. However, for that to change, a nation/place has to be able to be productive while having a family of 3+ kids sustainable. I don't see any reasonable measure that would manage such numbers. To reverse the current below 0.X SK has, 3+ is what they need to aim for. Try to sell that and have a modern urban life.

As of now, no rich nation is over 2.0. Some nations are around 1.7 ~ 1.9 which aren't bad. Still below 2.1 which means they need some immigration to offset the difference. They are the best example and yet fall short. Eventually even countries with high birth rate will fall under 2.0 when urbanization hits 60%+. This just means it maybe much more than cultural shift that needs to change, but the whole system as well.

Anyway, I don't see a population loss as a downsize as long productivity and security are in manageable level.

  • I know this sounds very bad but they can always "swallow" some smaller/much poorer nation, and I don't mean it by war... more like best friends situation.

Let's also don't forget about wars. As for like you mentioned China so if you look at 15-24 year old people then ratio is 1.17 which basically means they are in need for young women because there is much more young men than women.

And that's their own fault because there were times when they only wanted to have sons... so here they are.

  • In urban areas, neither men nor women want to breed so, no bride import is needed. And, the livelihood of agricultural wives has nothing to do with "infrastructure". I saw a story of a fisher's wife. She had to take care of all house chores, taking care of the elderly mother-in-law and a primary school kid, tending the small vegetation yard for household consumption and, 4+ hours daily to remove the shell of the oyster brought home by her husband. Her hands usually are wounded because of the oyster. She also had to dried the fish her husband could not sell by the end of the day. Not like there was a chance of her getting rich doing these so many works.

Yeah. Dunno if I'd go as far as being their own fault. This should be the expected result. Given the choice, most families may force themselves to have a son as traditionally they are the only way to continue the family line and viewed as money makers too. Sadly these birth control policies (which was seen as sensible at the time) didn't account for these consequences.

I do worry about the consequences of the population bust on China.

When I was referring to infrastructure, it was to give women in rural areas more options and opportunities in these rural areas, so they can be less pressured to seek marriage with Koreans or Chinese. These rural areas tend to have very few options in life for these women. I think it would be a better option than a cultural mentality change, as we know East Asian mentality is either slow to change or not changing at all.

About bride import not being a need, it is sadly just a matter of supply and demand or wants and wishes. There are lot of Korean men who want that traditional maid wife in urban or rural areas. I don't disagree with anything you said. It would be nice if these men truly wished for the well being of their wives instead of seeking a maid wife. I'm just looking at the situation on a macro level and this is one of the more obvious options. Giving these women better structure and options in life in their place of origin would help alleviate this problem.

If the wife chose another option, who would take these jobs? Fishermen want the wife so these necessary jobs are taken care of.

  • If the wife chose another option, who would take these jobs? Fishermen want the wife so these necessary jobs are taken care of.

Obviously I'm not a policy maker. With that in mind, there is no solution for everyone if any at all. Obviously these men would seek wives elsewhere if they can.

This is just a symptom of a much greater problem. All the involved governments and people can do is acknowledge the problem and alleviate it. Dunno what solution is ideal for these wife seeking men.
