Is DearALICE doomed?

  • Their debut was really weird. I remember I liked the song which is why I started to paying attention to them at first but then I think they said it was a pre realeased or something? So I thought well I'll check it out when they actually debut but then it turns out it was actually their debut and they promoted at some point? It was very confusing.

I also think that having them all the members be mostly white boys was a bad decision. They should have had at least one korean member, so when they promote in korea, he could be the spokes person. Also, no offense to them but I think most people who are into kpop are from various ethnicities and nationalities, so if they were not going to be mostly korean, they should have at least made the line up more diverse ala katseye if they wanted them to be more popular with the kpop audiences.

Still, I do think they could have potential but their management is really bad. I was gonna check out this release since I saw it pop up in my youtube recomendations but now that you are telling me is just one member singing? Thats again so weird and I don't understand why their teams keeps making these decisions.

Which song did you like? Ariana?

Yeah I think they saw One Direction and how popular they got and went with that as a model with 4/5 members being white boys.

Idk what made them decide to have just one member sing the whole song. It’s a really odd decision. Like are they trying to quietly launch a solo career for this one guy? A la pussycat dolls with nicole lol.

  • Yeah. I don't know about SM, but JYPE had the approach all wrong from the get go.

Like, the members they chose, the concepts...

All of it was way too childish to have any true longevity in the Western market.

    Agreed.

They both debuted around the same time. Looking at their debut concepts, you can still which one would be more successful. I think JYP had a hand in the creation of the group and he didn't understand what would work in the western market. The girls seem talented enough but the group just wasn't going to work. Correct me if I am wrong but one of the members was 13 years old. I think when appealing to the western market you can't have somebody that young in a group. I know in kpop that might work, but it's just not going to work in this market.

  • It didn’t help that their pool of trainees was much smaller since the search was localized in America and the age range for the auditions was smaller too. I remember ppl were furious that the age range for the auditions were from 12-16 years old.

JYP also prefers the girls next door image for the group and that obv would not really appeal to the west as much.

I actually think they probably could have done well with a GND concept. If they had gone older and more model-esque. Like people more like young Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, etc. They went more Jojo Siwa. Not to say those girls weren't pretty. Because they were.

But, yeah, nothing about them was going to appeal to what should have been their core demo. Today's teenagers.

  • Agreed.

Yeah. She was really young, and everyone was surprised when she was selected. I think she was like 14 when they debuted. Typical JYPE. They love to have really young maknaes. Same with NMIXX, NiziU, ITZY, and Twice. I don't how old Suzy was, but I know Sohee from Wonder Girls and Hyuna were also young af.

I think that also illustrates your point about JYPE's American label not doing much decision making for that group cause any true AR in the American market would have vetoed that decision.

Oh I could see the GND vision working now that you mention Olivia and Taylor. JYP’s girl next door ended up being more Disney/Nickelodeon style.

The outfits they styled them in were also not what western teenagers that look up to them would actually wear compared to katseye? They should’ve used a styling team from the US instead of a Korean one.
