I don't do autoplay, or ads or listen to Spotify's playlisting or anything.
But for the last few months it feels like I'm suddenly being hammered with notifications about artists I rarely listen to, heard one song from, artists I've blocked or outright never heard of

What's the purpose of following if I'm gonna be forcefed payola randos anyway 
If an artist keeps popping up on my page more than once when I have said not interested, I use the Spotify block button

To answer your question, this is one of the reasons I stopped using Spotify years ago and stick to Apple Music now.

Weirdly enough, she did a Gnarly cover with katseye that I had just been looking at before I opened Spotify. A nice "am I being watched" moment 
Since the new update, they do this all the time. I mean, if it's actually good, I don't mind, but I can't count how many artists I blocked on my main Spotify. This is basically a paid ad, just like playlisting or Youtube ads.
I use another one for reviews.
Note: If you use Spoti on PC (Windows) you can use plugins with Spicetify, and you can do a LOT of things, like hiding Podcasts and many other things.
