If Mother (MHJ) Had a Company and Money to Burn...

  • It's something I've thought about in a fantasy scenario, so it's not meant to be serious, but if MHJ had her own company (funded by herself in this case), and she had some money to burn, do you think she'd buy Shinee's, Red Velvet's, f(x)'s, and EXO's assets from SM? She could just start out with NewJeans (once she'd bought their assets from Ador) and create new groups, but she could buy the assets from SM that she helped create. It certainly would help bolster her standing in the industry, and help her create revenue streams if she did, but I wonder what people's opinions are.

Changed the title of the thread from “If Mother (MHJ) had a label and Money to Burn...” to “If Mother (MHJ) Had a Company and Money to Burn...”.
  • Actually I already imagined a company made by MHJ where she would have acts like NJZ, Krystal, Taeyeon and maybe even V in it :/ .

For her older groups, I don't think she would linger that much. She prefers to live in the present or in the future. And she is also an executive producer in the end, i'm sure she could work on some of sm's act's projects as such. I don't think she would limit herself to only her artists.

Her BG was also on the way. And i'm pretty sure she would have later on also debuted a more indie, edgy girl group just like f(x) at their time so she can experiment without restriction and push a dominantly alternative image and musical direction. maybe something more indie rock, indie sleaze style, trip hop or gothic; away from the y2k image and hip hop/drum&bass sound ...

I can see her doing that. Restricting herself to one sound or concept would be foolish, amd would stifle her creativity.

Indie rock, but also something even like Shibuya-kei, might be an interesting route for her. Going for something like Shibuya-kei would open listeners to a genre that has pretty much died off after the 90s. The way singers sang was unusual, and is something I could see her interested in, along with taking inspiration from Japanese music over other decades. Even a bit of City pop thrown in, too.

shibuya key's a great idea actually :thumbs-up: . specially knowing how much mhj loves bossa nova...

i'd say that plus with more southern gothic (mitskiest), 90's brit rock and trip hop influences. with some art pop elements but more boldly indie if you get what I mean...

that would be SUCH an intresting and eclectic mixt!

  • There's this group called Lush, who were a rock/britpop-esque group in the 90s, who I think would be perfect as a sound for MHJ 😉

Also, as for garage (which I think would be great for her), collaborating with the likes of Sugababes would be great since the group has gone back to their roots since they reform 😊

I'd love there to be a collar between them and NewJeans 😍😍😍

  • You know what? I was actually thinking that NJZ making some shibuya kei influenced songs would be great too :/ . like for example, newjeans also had elements of bossa nova like in right now and I could also see them have some shibuya kei influenced tracks as well.

newjeans also explored more city pop, funk genra as well with bubble gum so you can clearly see that they have some japanese influences. specially if they release songs for the japanese market!

I feel like MHJ really wants to do everything with NJZ like starting from the roots and explore all kind of genras, but with a more main art/dream pop & garage & hip hop sound. like she wants to explore all genras with them, she wants to do everything and give them everything.

i think njz is her anthology kind of group. her masterpiece.

but what i was trying to say is that her next gg might be more boldly and unapologetically indie focused. pushing out more experimental indie songs as singles and just having a more 'focused' musical identity maybe. less cameleon kind of ... like a mistki/radiohead/bjork kinda influence...

  • Interesting thought but one has to wonder why she didn't just start her own company way before this, she's respected enough that it shouldn't be that hard to get investors to form some nugu trainee money scam .

You make a good point. I think that in order to increase her profile, she went with the new kid on the block, and BSH probably outbid everyone with his offer.

According to her, starting a new company would take too much time and trouble.

She wanted a shortcut stategy with an established organization to lunch her LONG awaited gg (rv debuted in 2014!) she was crafting in her mind for years.

NJZ is literally the project of her life.

She thought hybe would be the best tool to reach the best outcome for her project specially after the way Bang talked to her and promised her to 'Build her world'.

That really worked because what she wanted most after decades of working in sm was total creative freedom.

You have to understand that she was the most demanded, respected and thought out creative in the field. As soon as news of her leaving SM came out, many people wanted to poch her.

And well Bango gave her the best offer :wellr: .

  • What is done is done, but maybe she should have been much more suspicious and reserved about that egotic sneak.

If she went with investors, I think it would've been the best course for her, as she could've paid off their investment in only a few years, and even buy out their shares within ten years.

  • However, what I was trying to say is that her next gg might be boldly and unapologetically indie focused. Pushing out more experimental indie songs as singles and just having a more 'focused' musical identity, maybe. less cameleon kind of ... like a mistki/radiohead/bjork kinda influence...

I've listened to Bjork before, and I like her music. Not listened to Mistki, and only a bit of Radiohead.
