Youtube-iation of KPop, as seen by the rise of Lee Youngji and qwer

  • Bibi's toppling of the Senior Singer opened the door for newer female acts not gearing for world conquest.

Lee Youngji, who began as a rapper but is mostly known as a youtube figure, topped the melon chart (although aespa later re-took the top position), and beat New Jeans today at Inkigayo.

It helped that she mostly abandoned rap and also collaborated with EXO's D.O., but Exo's stars are not as high as it used to be so her merit as a youtube personality did help a lot for her success, since she was seen as at most a mediocre rapper.

Meanwhile, qwer, a brainchild of the youtuber Kim Gyeran (Gyeran means 'egg') rose to as high as #3 in Melon Hot 100.

Can Lee Youngji or qwer hold foreign concerts?

Probably not. At most qwer might do some busking or small stages in Japan, since one of its members, Siyeon, was in NMB48 for a couple of years and should speak Japanese. (Despite of the name, Hina of qwer is Korean, real name Jang Nayoung.)

Youtube personalities becoming more important in KPop does crowd out KPop.

In some ways, the Senior Singer did stand like a huge wall to prevent such figures from infilliating KPop. But now her dominance is gone, all these small time figures from youtube programs only Koreans watch are entering the main stages, furthering the decline of KPop.

But the KPop industry is not blameless - if they cannot beat these kind of figures, something is not right.
