Western women flock to South Korea because of kpop and kdrama, writes CNN

  • I’m not sure if I should feel more creeped out or sad for the women who must be beyond dumb (or if I’m nice just very naive). How out of touch to you have to be to think kdramas are an accurate portrayal of korean men.

If these girls were teenagers it would be one thing but according to article they’re adults. Suppose men aren’t the only ones with yellow fever :huuh:

It’s like going to the UK expecting to marry Mr Darcy.

  • I mean men have been going to Japan to find their real life anime waifu for years, so I'm not surprised to hear women are looking for their real life kdrama oppas.

I personally feel like most of these are carrying fantasy romanticized notions of Korea being a utopia where all the men are kind and devoted and ignore societal issues. I read a Twitter thread from the article's writer yesterday that mentioned several points he wasn't able to touch on in the piece.

I’m just worried that they would end up in harms way😱.

But to think that the korean men are like in kdramas (who is mostly written by women I read) is just…

It seems by his tweets that:

Asian women are saints and western women are sluts.

I think he's saying that's how they're seen by Korean men. Korean men like western women because everything they've learned about them from media (probably including porn) is that there are very few barriers to sex with them even if that's not actually true. But it's not just Korean men that stereotype women like that. Even in the US, European women are seen as more sexual than American women and Asian women are seen as more submissive.

    True here as well

Especially scandinavian women, yikes. I supposed its also down to religion in some cases and also the way women are seen in certain countries in general.

Also yes Asian women are seen as submissive - it’s annoying to say the least and keep women from all over the world in general in the “weak” category. When we are not🥳.

Definitely smacks of the old "Going to Japan to live a real life anime" stereotype that was big in the late 00's and 10's.

Speaking of which, while I was living in Japan in '15-'18, there was a bit of stuff in the media there about Japanese women going to Korea or trying to meet Korean men for much the same reasons. That k-drama's were popular in Japan and some Japanese women started believing that Korean men (as distorted through k-drama lenses) were better than Japanese men.

Yeah the journalist in the article mentioned that as well. So not really news but it sells better when it’s a western narative?

Kmen has a rep that is too good :boredr:

Especially for how they (generalizing) think about women and also how they treat women.

Ps are Japanese men really that different from Kmen?

    Not all kmen of course.

  • I'm a straight guy, so I didn't date many Japanese men...

But older Salarymen can be kind of gross?

  • :whatk:

    Especially blond/western women beware :pepe-life-support:

Not surprising this has been a thing for years now. Dumb forgieners coming here thinking that kpop kdrama fever dream is real life. You wonder why forgien fans get clowned on soo much, this shit is why. Real Korea and Koreans are nothing like what you see on tv this includes those idols and actors off camera they are NOT like what tv shows you. Set phasers to dissapointment

I highly agree and to add my experience:

The problem in Korea is that a lot of men think that Western women are “exotic” and “open” and it’s almost a trophy to date or sleep with a foreigner. It’s so creepy how some Koreans act in clubs and given that most Koreans only go clubbing to find a ONS, a lot of Koreans think it’s okay to just sexually harass foreigners since according to them (one said that to me. No joke) they are used to it. Also they do roofies a lot with foreigners. I have heard a lot of times how Korean men love to cheat, too.

I wouldn’t say disappointment but people should stop thinking that negative behavior is only a thing in their own country. Most countries have similar problems. It’s just that some are quite open about it and some just hide it. That’s why people expect stuff like this more from Western countries than countries like Japan or Korea. I still really like Korea and it has its charming sides.
