Why are there people saying that Hanni from NewJeans doesn't look Vietnamese but looks Korean or Japanese or looks like Jennie from Blackpink or Eunchae from LE SSERAFIM and that the Korean singer Hyein from NewJeans looks Vietnamese ?

Hanni is really good at korean so i wonder if she is half korean hmm

As a fellow SEA (pan-mixed at that), I feel like many non-SEA KPOP fans have limited exposure to SEA physical looks and thus are a bit ignorant in terms of what possibilities of the way we can look. Depending on the country in SEA, the physical appearance can be wide ranging and if you have Chinese or East Asian ancestors - one can also look very East Asian re physical features too. I am not Vietnamese so I won't make any claims but as a fellow SEA, I can def see Hanni's Vietnamese beauty.

why are people surprised?

SEA and EA are really close to each other and have interacted a lot in history. its only natural that similar looking people pop up.

West china looks practically european or middle eastern, some northern chinese look mongolian or even russian depending on heritage etc&etc.

you will look similar to people in your area eventually.

I've held my tongue on this but why are people so concerned about race and discuss it as such? Maybe I'm a little too sheltered by American views but the individual is the individual and what race or what blood flows the veins hardly has any bearing on who she is, does, and how well she does.

I'm not criticizing OP at all but I'm totally confused as to why this makes such big waves. at best, in my opinion there's only a few brownie points to be earned with the idol's member race.

As SEA member, I think this topic is important to SEA fans because it's rare enough as it is that one of own (outside of Thailand) enters the global stage and it's important to not erase her identity/heritage from SEA - in this specific case - Hani is Vietnamese etc.

FYI: However I too thought maknae was the Vietnamese member when I first watched Attention without looking up the member's names and stats. A lot of kpop idols don't look Korean per se, they just look like good-looking East Asians.

she most likely is bc iirc one of her parents is from hanoi and the other is from hcm city, and then their family moved to australia when she was young. they’re most probably middle class and of kinh ethnicity like the majority in vietnam
