For a year or more there was discussion and fighting about it, but in 2019-2020 Blackpink took over as the #1 girl group in K-pop.
Could it have gone differently: was it bad strategy from JYPE to focus on Japan and the group? If they started sooner with solos for individual TWICE members and promotion targeting the West, would TWICE have stayed on top?
Or would Blackpink always have come up on top? Thoughts?
I don't think it would matter. The difference is more in the very nature of the groups themselves. Blackpink is more swag and hip hop or just appeal to international audiences in general.
Their "girl next door" look doesn't generate the same kinda appeal as Blackpink member's style does that's why they have a much easier time in Asian markets like Japan where this look is sought after and appreciated. Americans will always prefer the tougher style which is why Twice's solo power just won't be the same, their members are too sweet looking.

That's actually a good point. Americans love girl crush, swag and also sexy 'n skin, and BP come closer to the styles Americans love.
But global and the West and Spotify is more than just the good old US of A, there's lots more countries and continents that don't have the exact same tastes as Americans.

Rose might have done better in western countries and ntered hot100, UK singles chart etc but was out of them in like a week. nayeon didn't make it to either but is doing a lot better in japan which is the second biggest music market in the world and is pulling great numbers on spotify too. so nope, she didn't do better. maybe a tie cause i don't see nayeon outlasting her on spotify but rose simply didn't do better and neither is nayeon 'hardly scratching the success of BP's least popular'

Jeongyeon and Dahyun have both appeared in Gallup multiple times. Jeongyeon is the most popular in Korea second only to Nayeon so yeah, her solo will not flop. Don't worry.

Nothing bad said about her, but let's be realistic here, even with their 2 year hiatus the popularity of the BP members currently far surpass that of TWICE members and that includes Rose.
I don't think so. Twice doesn't have many remarkable or charismatic members. If they went solo, it give less chance for group promotions which would hurt the group as a whole in the long run. How many Twice members can actually finish a whole song, live or not, and being charismatic/fun, ALONE? Better yet, come away with great songs?
Blackpink has ALOT of international fans backing them up. No matter what they put out, fans will certainly buy it. They're not buying for the song, they buying for the artists. So it's not something you can compete with. No matter which group go solos or whatever, as long as they do not have a huge fanbase like Blackpink, they cannot take Blackpink out of the conversation. Whether the song's good or not, that's another story.

In those two years, Lisa and rosé made their solo debuts and promoted themselves in Korea and Thailand, Jisoo had an entire drama, only Jennie was inactive outside of her modelling work.
Nope, not with their cutesy concept and the fact that they have too many members. The company wouldn’t be able to manage all of them equally and it would be difficult branding all 9 of them individually even if some of them won’t be music related. BP had a great advantage of being only 4, that’s why I personally prefer YG groups (except Treasure lol).

It’s true dunno why onces are still arguing. I gotta say though one of the reasons that BP is able to stay in the spotlight even with a 2 year hiatus is because of their love for fashion and having fashion related contents. It helps since they make a lot of noise with them.
