Are there any current idols who are able to take the triple crown of music, acting and variety entertainment success?

  • It's so rare nowadays for idols to succeed in even one or two areas of entertainment. In the past there was Lee Seung-gi and IU who were/are famous for being active and achieved great success in all three areas.

Are there any idols who can achieve that kind of fame and success in recent years or in the future? And no, I'm not talking about your idols with small support web-drama roles as "acting" or flopping songs that leave the chart in 2 days.

Obviously it's all speculation, but are there any with potential for mainstream success or star quality like those mentioned above?

    Approved the thread.
  • Jennie?

She blew up cause of her variety, has a good career with bp, a solo that did very well.

And she was offered the hbo the idol thing

  • Sejeong, is probably the best bet.

She has already has some of "lighter" awards/nominations for Singing, Variety, Acting and Musical Acting.

And shown the potential in all three fields.

Singing - IOI & Flower Way solo, though gugudan and later solos did not succeed.

Variety/Reality shows - Produce 101 itself, then Talents for sale, think Busted was very well received.

Acting - Both Uncanny Counters and Business Proposal have been hits, she getting fulsome praise.

But yes, she has not yet fired in all three, in close proximity. We will see.

IU, she did do variety, but she does not seem a natural, in fact that she isn't a natural in that setting, is what works for her. I doubt if we would ever see her doing full fledged variety ever again.

Frankly, idols participation in variety have come down a lot in recent years, even from 3rd gen.

    Few reasons,

    • With Social Media boom, Variety exposure is not as much needed as in past, for exposure to fans. Just doing Vlive to the hypnotized fans will do.
    • Second, fandoms have proven themselves incapable of taking a joke and that affects how the idols have to present themselves.
    • Then that it is far more effective to appeal to (fan service, parasocial bond) with a defined smaller fandom who will actually spend money, than appeal to public in general- for which varieties are more effective.

So maybe the triple crown will have to be something else now - Singing, Acting and Instagram/tiktok/Vlive(?)

  • most popular idols of 3rd gen and 4th gen aren't that interested in branching out to acting unlike the ones in 1st and 2nd gen and also variety is literally dead for idols since mid 3rd gen

  • Doyoung is a main vocalist with his own projects, has starred in a musical, a television show and has this week been added to the main cast of the variety show Lipstick Prince. It's very early days to call him a variety show star by any means but it's getting there.

  • Yena

She already has 2 daesangs in variety award, her music career is also good. But she only has acted in webdrama, tho her drama is popular in Japan and always chart in Naver

  • Maybe IVE‘s Yujin? Group is very successful, she‘s the cast of a new variety show and she‘s shown some acting skills (knetz really want her to act).

I can imagine Wonyoung managing it too, if she’s skilled a little at acting

  • Jennie?

She does well, but she's far too inactive to be really considered in these conversations. When's the last time she appeared on a variety show? And she's only had a solo debut (a really strong one, but still only limited discography), not to mention the acting thing has yet to be seen (we don't even know what and how big of a role it is).

  • Idol participation has gone down in general, but the ones who have real public popularity are still there very active, as you've mentioned Kim Sejeong is still active, Mamamoo Hwasa was still in I Live Alone, Lee Mijoo the most recent example, or Astro's Eunwoo was in Master in the House.

  • Got7 Jinyoung? He sings and acts, just needs to get out there a bit more in variety. When he does he's great though

There maybe many more, but the level of activity and level of success, that brings the numbers to a few

    Hwasa, acting success?

    Mijoo, resume singing? Acting?

    Eunwoo, singing success? Variety success?

That's the challenge, not mere activity, but "crown".

As far as I know, Sejeong has the highest potential.
