This is dumb. In the end, who the hell cares if she contributed ANYTHING to K-pop; she makes music that the general public likes, it's a reciprocal relationship in Korea. Stop talking as if K-pop is a living organism that feels like its debt needs to be paid by IU—it's a damn music industry. K-pop artists, workers, and entertainment workers wants to invest in IU because they believe she's worth investing in, which she proved time and time again. She in turn invests in creating music that people like, help other artists, companies, and even the general public because she desires to do so; not because she feels indebted to pay back the industry. If some of y'all are butthurt because of the positive response she receives from her peers and fans in contrast to some of your favorite artists, then there's nothing at all to be said. Her main demographic is the general public in Korea, but if people in the industry and international fans want to listen to her and contribute to her growth, then that's not her fault lol.

If we're talking literally in the ENTIRE decade (2011-2020), then in Korea it's IU WITHOUT question—no one has had higher peaks with sustained success over a period of a decade than her in the 2010s (arguably ever in Kpop, but I won't go there here). Internationally it could still be argued IU (Asian countries), but if we're also including the Western front, then it's without question BTS (2nd half of the decade). Psy definitely opened the door for Kpop in the West (and globally with Gangnam Style, nothing will be bigger than the peak that it had), but BTS definitely capitalized.

IU does benefit from her reputation, but she benefits from it because she's the one who built it up and consistently backs it up with her releases and interactions with fans throughout the years lol. This song was good. And tbh, I know that the static noise is a hyperbole, but the fans don't even have to worry about her releases because she's in total control of her music—production, lyrics, song-writing, etc.

That's not even 1/10th of her discography that already shows so much versatility lol.

I mean the premise of the thread is not really true, I'm not sure if people here are trolling or what.
The song is #1 on all charts, overwhelmingly far above anything else atm and the still getting roof hits on both melon and genie, now having second-highest ever on both, and might even break the records on both charts this week if it continues. It currently has 590k UL's, almost 3x the second place on the charts, and that's on a coming of the weekend when the listeners drops by a ton.
Getting over 800k UL in today's charts is like getting 1,2M just a year ago.

For IU its a pretty normal release, for most other artists in Korea it is something they can only dream of doing maybe one or twice in their whole career. For IU it's just another song added to her long list of hits.
In a few weeks/months when she releases her album its almost guaranteed she will have her 25 #1 hit and 20th PAK, and people will have even more inane reasons for why she's failing or is a has been.
It has lost market shares, yes. Yet it's still the biggest music service by far in the country (spotify or apple would kill to have over 10% of a countrys population subscribed to them). Melon is statistically enough to tell what the general population listens to in korea, and because of its size, also the least manipulated chart by kpop group fandoms.
Melon has not lost its importance because it has never mattered from an international point of view to begin with and none has claimed it has either. We are discussing the charting performance in korea, by an Korean artist, IU , an artist that also happens to be the biggest act in korea itself in the last decade, not any kpop group who is mainly marketed to and for an international audience, so of course melon is relevant here in this discussion.
By your logic, we should only care what china and India listen to
Got em :D

2017 was IU's year lol

woahh really
Absolutely, and overhyped. Their songs may have a signature sound, but it comes off repetitive and at times one dimensional, especially their more recent tracks.
But hey, said something controversial lol

Black Pink and BTS are overrated
