TikTok should start banning users that fake disorders!!!

  • This is too much of a complex issue to make an exact conclusion on. People on tiktok attention whore the fuck out of ANYTHING. Even the things that hinder them. They make any horrific event in their life as a trend. May it be a coping mechanism? Yes. But it’s not something I can understand. I have seen people use their trauma in a viral sound. Me personally, I could never.

Tiktok should immediately ban the privileged fucks making jokes about the Russian-Ukrainian conflict/ any REAL LIFE issue. Yeah the tiktokers who are too out of touch with reality should acknowledge that they’re not as mentally ill as it is cool to be, but I’ve seen TOO many tiktoks I did not ask for out of my algorithm, making jokes out of current horrific events.

Mental illness is much more close to home to them as opposed to real life events out of their radar.

If we thought nothing can surpass the dark hole tumblr was…. But then TikTok appeared and they are way more lenient with a lot of things, thats why all the attention seekers moved over there.

Them making fun of the Ukrainian war is another issue I would have talked about another time… this just annoyed me the most the moment I made this Thread cause I saw 3 users faking Tourette and one ADHD

  • I think if someone has a whole platform and eventually even making money or a career by faking disorders, I think we can and should ask them for proof when tons of people start to question if your being real.

You can of course ask but that person, real or fake, has ever right to not want to put that much information out there. And TikTok certainly can't ask for that kind of stuff either.

There are a lot of different reporting features that blatantly faking a mental illness/disorder falls under, so honestly I'm not really sure what else could be done

yeah, imagine forcing mentally ill people to prove their mental illness to be allowed to talk about it publicly. that would be a disaster. anyone can report someone for faking it, even if it's real. people shouldn't need a doctor's note to talk about their mental illness.

as shitty as it is, there's no way to ethically enforce this in a practical way.

  • Not only faking it, but romanticizing them too. People romanticize some illnesses that I am diagnosed with and I feel as though it is harmful and truly hurtful.

There is always a way… of course nobody should be forced. But I think this is ethically less problematic than what those fakers do. They are the majority on this app right now. That’s a big problem.

There has already been a noticed link of the decline of mental health among teenagers and self-diagnosis and TikTok that is has become a serious to take issue.

i hear your frustration, and i agree it's a problem. the same phenomenon happened in tumblr around the early 2010s and livejournal before that. tiktok is just it's new platform atp.

but what solution would you enforce in this scenario that wouldn't turn into an extra burden people who actually have a mental illness have to go through as a result?

Well personally, I think it should come from the people themself, at least those who’s whole platform is about their mental illness. If you can already display yourself in the most vulnerable moment, I mean if you can openly talk about it, or the ones who claim to have Tourette record themself when they got their ticks… like the list goes on, why can’t you show a doctors note when people start to question you. How is this an extra burden for people who already get attention for their illness, you can show everything about your disorder but not a doctors record with an actual diagnosis? This is where it gets to burdensome?

Anyway ok… at least if they don’t want to show it to viewers, there should be a policy that says that when a user gets reported a lot for the suspicion of faking an illness then they have to provide a doctors note with an official diagnosis that has to be checked by TikTok and if they confirm that it’s real they are allowed to continue with their content, if they refuse to provide anything then they should be prohibited to continue with such content or they can continue but there should be a little warning about the users content.

Something similar already exist with informational platforms like TedTalk, if you want to talk about health topics you have to provide something that proofs your qualified to talk about it on stage, which means someone who suffers from an illness also has to show them an official diagnosis before they are allowed to talk to the audience.

Also at School or at work you are forced by legislation to provide a doctors note that you are incapable of doing certain activities to be excused… so in some areas providing doctors notes is already a thing so I don’t think it’s that unethical.
