Since you tend to date people you already know something about, it shouldn't be that difficult. I mean I understand your predicament. I used to think the same. I don't wanna ruin this good bond that we have by confessing what I truly feel about the person to make them uncomfortable. But what I have realised over the years is that girls really don't take it to heart as much as we think. It's just in our heads. We just think alot to not take it a step further. Now about flirting like I said it has to be natural. What I do is be subtle about it. I don't feel the need to show out my true feeling in a go. I do it over time. Especially when you know that person already. I mean you atleast converse and know a little bit about them, right? So show them that you are interested in them first by doing little things like remembering the things she told you she likes, showing some excitement at doing some things together, be more biased towards her than other girls or sometimes even your friends in front of her, subtly compliment her in front of her friends, etc. These small things will let her know that you atleast like her without confessing it yourself. Then when you are sure that she knows and she hasn't reciprocated, do some boyfriend moves like visiting small places together like shopping place or malls (places outside your normal sphere but still not like dating places), eating or drinking together, etc. And while doing these things when you feel the time is right just confess it buddy.

Btw if you want to flirt with a really unknown or very little known girl then first better make sure that she atleast knows your existence. Flirting with these types of people depends alot on your appearance. It is almost always about your first interaction with unknown people. You have to look good, talk well to take things further. Find common ground or a common friend who can help you be in their presence more often to make your presence known.

I also haven't dated since my breakup last year and this is the longest I haven't had a fling. So I am also planning on getting back at it but haven't come across my type of girl for some time now. Let's see.

First of all these connections are just there for some time. We have to get this through our mind. You'll find more connections as you progress through your life. There's only number of people you can count on your hand who will stay with you for lifetime. So never feel bad about losing connection. It happens with everyone.

About girls...... I have confessed to 2 girls whom I considered as my friends. Both of them friendzoned me and you know what? our bond only grew after that. The point is if you are a good guy and she knows you very well then there most probably won't be a loss of connection. You'll lose that connection only if she thinks of you as a pervert. Then it just means she didn't understand you enough even though you considered her as a good friend of yours. Honestly you shouldn't feel regret for losing that connection.

Nowadays most people understand that it is okay to feel attracted to someone during young age. Especially girls. They are more open minded than us guys. So it is better to confess if you are attarcted to someone. It's relieving more than anything lol.....
