Oped: Kpop is still doing better than most other genres and kpop artists still selling astronomical numbers

  • not everyone needs massive touring power to make money

How are the average kpop groups doing touring-wise compared to the tours of other non-english singing acts??

Everyone tours in their home country. That’s the problem with Kpop. It’s a very small country. Without hallyu they can’t break even being a smaller act. Bigger countries don’t need to leave to make money.

  • Y’all are comparing album sales to expenses.

I’m just talking album sales. Y’all talking about trainee debt. Thats the scumbag companies fault. Not the album sales.

but album sales are meaningless in absence of context no?

the true value would be profit that comes from those sales right?

I remember reading about TLC an American group who like sold over 10m albums worldwide and because of "interesting" accounting they didn't get much money and eventually went bankrupt...

  • Why do people say kpop artists are doing so well worldwide when it’s literally just BTS who can rival big western acts in terms of total revenue.

The Korean music industry is so small yet oversaturated that they NEED to travel outside of Korea to even remotely make money. Unlike Japanese artists who can make millions just staying in Japan their whole career. m

People forget that there literally 30-40 groups who debut every single year. That’s literally hundreds of individual idols. Yet not even 10 of those new groups make it into Korea’s mainstream charts and even less travel out of Korea to tour in other countries.

And then you have the issue of even moderately successful idols can’t even afford to buy their own cars and houses. Use BTS as an example, they literally had a shared apartment paid by Hybe until maybe around 2017? 2018? Maybe even as late as 2019.

exactly…. and there’s literally only like maybe 10 internationally “successful” kpop acts out of like hundreds…. and most of those have been active for years.

there were like 50 group debuts last year and i bet all my money no one in this forum has heard of half of them and probably not even 5 of those nee groups have won in a weekly music show….
