What is the verdict on 1st gen success?

  • I would say 1st gen was successful, like H.O.T. , g.o.d., Sechskies were extremely huge. Haerd g.o.d. got called Nation's boy group and H.O.T pretty much invented and popularized the kpop groups we see today. People may say they were not successful due to being local, but kpop is a Korean industry, and the country of origin should matter more at least when it comes to discussions like this.

  • They're the backbone for the industry we know now. If they hadn't popularized the idea of fusing pop, hip hop, rock, R&B with Korean lyrics, K-pop as we know it might not exist.

That said, their sales are indicative of the era. There was no online streaming services so people had to buy albums to listen to the songs they enjoyed or watch music programs, which is why TV ratings were so high back then.

But the fact the most popular groups can still make comebacks and are still relevant in the industry is proof that the 1st gen has lasting impact across multiple areas of the entertainment industry.

  • they were mad successful!!

i heard (i forgot which group) seo taji and boys (?) sold like 1.5 million albums within korea during the first month of its release.

which is a crazy big number if you ask me.

  • I mean since I'm relatively new to kpop and have only heard of the "successful" 1st gen groups...where there also a lot of nugu and/or less successful groups that failed???

Most likely a regular day time job.

Sechskies were not nugu but one of the members became a businessman in America or something like that and another member from Uptown (also successful) became an owner of an entire strip of restaurants.

There's a few mid tier groups that made a special appearance on a Korean program singing a legit hit they had 15 years prior like Kiss, but you asked for nugu and it's hard finding their names on English databases such as Girlfriend (the original Gfriend).

sorry I'll rephrase my question then...since you know more about them than me...were there a lot of them...ie..is it like now where a few groups succeed whist a long of groups languish in nugudom/are just unsuccessful like today?

unfortunately, yes. I've been researching 1st gen for a few years and I'm still discovering new artists on music shows from 99-2000.

so in that case like today then and the 2nd gen which I guess I know a little bit more than the 1st gen...

that a few groups dominated whilst the majority of them were just unheard of/nugu etc ?
