Do You think there is a different between a solo album and a Mixtape

  • Over the years the difference between a mixtape and an album has grown smarter and smaller tbh, but what I can tell you is that, in the hip-hop world, the difference is in the goals. Albums are made to generate units, produce hit singles and sell physicals. While these may also apply to mixtapes, their goals are more flexible. Mixtapes are made to attract new fans, to create hype and to collaborate with artists you want to without a commercial goal for it. Mixtapes in western hip-hop industry are also much longer cause, as I said, commercial success is not a goal so streamability doesn't matter much. It's basically just to vibe to put it in a simple way lol. Putting out music without any pressure.

Free mixtapes were just recently popularized by chance the rapper and such, cause you don't have to move units so Putting it out on streaming platforms is enough.

For my faves atleast all the things I mentioned above do apply, they have themselves said that they put out Mixtapes and not albums cause the pressure for commercial success and doing well on charts is much lesser.

Thank You for explaining this to me

But what about something like SPIDER by Hoshi (Mixtape) and Duality by I.M (solo album)

Just to add to this, at least with my favs when they put out mixtapes they don’t promote at all. They release the mixtape and thats all, no music shows, no live performances at all. You get the mixtape, the mv and they even put a free download link to download the whole mixtape in the description. They don’t only put it on soundcloud

Like I said, the goals for an album may also apply for a mixtape, they are just more flexible. You could also promote a mixtape of you want to, and you can also sell physicals for mixtapes too, that's what rappers used to do before free mixtapes got popularized. Many used to record live performances and sell it as physical mixtapes too!

  • What I'm getting from Wikipedia for Duality is

So looks like they didn't release physicals to avoid censoring?? Idk how that makes sense but they had a reason to not release physicals ig

    :cryingr:

Honesty that kinda sucks tho for I.M first solo album

Also do you think that some mixtape have similar in these tracks rather than an solo album having a your colours /sounds

I'd say from listening experience, mixtapes definitely tend to have more of the artists color than albums, cause albums are made for commercial success so you have to bend your style a bit to fit in to what people want to listen to.

Mixtapes also tend to have more critical acclaim lol
