Kpop Girl Groups Rankings & Rank Distribution 21-07 – 20-03

  • There are many opinions about what the top groups are. However, the only ones we’ve come across that appear to have an objective basis are those created by the Korean Business Research Institute (KBRI). These rankings are determined through an analysis of the consumer participation, media coverage, interaction, and community indexes of various girl groups. The KBRI statistics are released monthly. Our analysis provides a broader and more balanced view by combining the monthly rankings into annual averages. The KBRIrankings are based on social media metrics only. To see an analysis of sales you should use the Gaon Music Charts.

This month we have made a significant change in our model to account for disbanded groups. Many times the KBRI data still includes groups that have been disbanded. For example, although Stellar disbanded in 2018, it has still been ranked eight times in the top 30 in the past 18 months by KBRI. This change moved IZ*ONE and GFRIEND out of the top 10 allowing Girls’ Generation to come back into the top 10 as well as Lovelyz and WJSN.

For example, TWICE has ranked number two for six periods and number three for twelve periods during the time that we have maintained data for this analysis. The popularity of the top groups is remarkably stable. The lower the rank, the more variable the rank distribution becomes.
