What are your thoughts on the "filler member" label? Are there any groups with unnecessary members?

Usually most big groups have filler members

I always feels like Heechul is mis-used. I mean he's actually a really good vocalist, but he can't really shine in the rapper position.
Heechul is a special case, he barely perform with SJ because of an old leg injury that makes it painful for him to perform on stage. He didn't even participate in their last tour and sometimes he only lends his voice to the songs but doesn't take part in the choreography.
Otherwise, he's more of a vocalist than a rapper and you can hear this clearly when you listen to SJ's albums.
When SJ debuted he was like the center of the group, he had lots of lines and the most screen and center time. But he once had and incident where his voice cracked on national TV and he got bashed relentlessly to the point it destroyed his self esteem and he personally requested to have his lines reduced. He even considered leaving the group at the time and reportedly only stayed because the other members wouldn't let him go.

Poor man. I had the chance to watch Suju live at KCon but Heechul wasn't with them because of his leg. Psychologically, he had to deal with very heavy things that could happen to a person. He survived an accident that nearly killed him, with a wound to his foot that could have disrupted his career. He lost friends who were very close to him. He was ruthlessly criticized for just a voice crack that could happen to any idol. I really think he's a lot stronger than he looks.
