I think if you really lean into practicing and refining your smiley concept You can really do well with minimalist animations.

A good example of a fully-fledged animator with a following that does similar things, (but maybe a bit more complicated) is Telepurtle. I learned how to draw a pleated skirt and a foot from his short animations.
