Ok the first thing you need to understand is how the pieces move. Let's start with the pawns.
Each move they can only move one space forward (forward is toward your opponent's pieces) EXCEPT for the very first time you move a pawn.
When a pawn is in it's initial position and you haven't moved it yet, you can choose to move it either 1 space forward OR 2 spaces forward. You can do this for any pawns. Like if you have moved a pawn 2 spaces forward, you can still do it for any other pawns if you want. But if you choose to move a pawn only 1 space on its first move, you don't get to move that pawn 2 spaces any more.
