I'm not a fan of gel since it dehydrates the hair and leaves it in a bad, unnatural state.
Try something like wax or clay. I've used Hanz de Fuko Claymation and I like it.

Gel isn't absolutely terrible. It just leaves the hair crispy and unnatural at the end of the day, which I don't like. Make sure to wash it off entirely.

Pomade is great. I'd say it's a better alternative to gel. Personally, I don't like the shiny texture and look of pomade, so I avoid it. However, if that's something you like, go for it by all means. I just prefer more of a matte look and texture.
