  • Not as Song Soheeish as I had hoped tbh. It's ok. Their voices are great, of course. But I hope JYPE/Innit go harder on the worldwide traditional folk stuff that Song Sohee does in future :(

I agree, but I think it's a good start. It's approachable for the average listener, yet still firmly establishes their sound and direction. Not everyone will gel with this gugak-pop fusion immediately, so a debut that eases people into the concept isn't a bad thing at all; there's plenty of time for them to embrace it further. Instead of just leaning harder into the concept, JYPE/Innit should look to Song Sohee as a blueprint. They could even bring her on as a producer, given that she already handles her own production, composition, and songwriting. She not only has the sound I believe they should be aiming for down to a T, but she also has a long list of credentials as a legitimate Gyeonggi minyo singer, which would add a level of authenticity to their music. It would be great to see them go in the direction of something like "A Blind Runner" or "Ashine!" next.

However, they are likely wary of leaning too far into a niche, which could make the group difficult to market to a mainstream audience. It’s one thing to set yourself apart, but it’s another entirely to ensure the concept has the longevity and broad appeal to sustain a long-term career. I enjoyed the song and appreciate their direction, so it would be disappointing if they barely made it to their first anniversary because their sound alienated listeners by leaning too far into the niche aspects of the fusion. Unfortunately, not everyone has the capacity to appreciate what they have to offer. However, it's somewhat reassuring to see that the response has been pretty positive so far. I think many are looking for something different; I just hope the novelty doesn't wear off.

Anyway, that's my long-winded way of saying I enjoyed their debut and look forward to seeing their sound develop.

  • Their vocals sound very good, and I think the chorus does sound good. I think the issue with a song like this it may lack replayability imo. The MV does look nice and there's some nice visuals in the MV.

Now, I wonder if they're going to put them in a niche lane or are they going to make them approachable and try to grab a bigger audience. I think if we're talking about international audience, then I'm unsure if they'll be big. However, I could see them creating their own lane for domestic audience which isn't a bad thing.

Internationally, I think if they nail the balance the way Song Sohee does, they could have a broad audience. But it's not a k-pop audience (think: The Unthanks, Dead Can Dance, Enya, David Sylvian, Rosalia, Geinoh Yamashirogumi).

    Which is fine.

K-pop is in itself niche outside of the very big players. JYPE itself guarantees a bigger than would be possible otherwise though,

In a similar way that Babymetal is probably the most internationally successful jpop group I suppose, although I admit that folk is perhaps a bit more niche than metal.

That's a good point because I think Babymetal is more popular internationally than they are in Japan.

I think for folk music it's more on the indie scene than mainstream. That's not a bad thing for this group because I feel in indie side of music they're more willing to give international artist a chance. So, they might get a following even though folk is considered a niche genre imo.

They’ll probably just be niche artists while JYP’s next girl group will be the thing that they want to market to bigger audiences

  • I liked it. The song was nice, they sounded nice, and the MV was beautiful. I also like their name as a group.

I think they'd be great for an OST for a historical drama, and I hope that they lean into the traditional visuals more. If they played traditional instruments too, I think that'd be really cool to see.
