According to the ‘September 2025 Population Trends’ released by the National Data Service (formerly Statistics Korea) on the 26th, the number of births in September was 22,369, an increase of 1,780 (8.6%) compared to the same month last year.
This marks the 15th consecutive month of rising births since July last year, and the highest level for September since the same month in 2020 (23,499 births).
The number of births in the third quarter (July-September) was 60,539, an increase of 3,767 (6.1%) compared to the same period last year. This increase was smaller than the rise seen in the third quarter of last year (4,507).
The cumulative number of births from January to September was recorded at 191,040.
This represents an increase of 12,488 births compared to the same period last year, marking the largest year-on-year increase for this period in 18 years since 2007 (31,258 births).
Based on the rising birth trend since the second half of last year and the number of marriages, the likelihood is growing that this year's annual birth count will exceed last year's figure (238,317 births).
The total fertility rate (the average number of children a woman is expected to have in her lifetime) in September was 0.85, and for the third quarter, it was 0.81, representing increases of 0.16 and 0.04, respectively, compared to the same period last year.
The increase in births was particularly pronounced among women in their 30s. The birth rate by maternal age in the third quarter showed a decrease of 0.1 births for women aged 25-29 compared to the same period last year, but increased by 2.4 births for women aged 30-34 and by 5.3 births for women aged 35-39.
Marriages, a leading indicator for births, have also been on an upward trend for 18 consecutive months since April last year.
The number of marriages in September was recorded at 18,462, an increase of 3,095 (20.1%) compared to the same month last year. Both the increase in volume and the growth rate are the highest ever recorded for September.
The number of marriages in the third quarter was 58,305, an increase of 6,600 (12.8%) compared to the same period last year.
By age group, the marriage rate increased the most for both men and women in their early 30s compared to the third quarter of last year.
Cumulatively from January to September, 176,178 marriages were performed. This represents an increase of 14,417 marriages (8.9%) compared to the same period last year.
