When Life gives Tangerines weekly discussion thread!

    So, I made up my mind after seeing some knocker making a thread about nothing as usual, so here's a real thread for UaenaTaglist (excluding Knocky) and others who actually watch or will watch this amazing show!

    I finished the first 4 episodes yesterday, and I don't want to go into details until the show is over, but I can say that it's already one of the most well-written Kdrama with STRONG FEMALE characters, real life stories. The chemistry between IU and Bogum is crazy, even the kid actors are crazy talented, especially the girl who plays the young Aesun. She had a big role before, btw, she was the young Seri in "Crash Landing on You".


    Anyway... the balance between drama, and comedy is great, and it's not over the top. There are some interesting choices, like when the Korean Jack (Titanic) doing his thing, but I can forgive them for that. 😂


    Aesun, aka the Human Whistle, is already my favorite woman of the year!🤣


    So far, this is a strong 8/10, let's see if it can go higher after it's over.


    BTW, releasing the show on International Women's Day was a good idea!

    Are all K-dramas promoted this much/this well? Or is it my sampling bias.


    Both IU & Bogum, and some of the other casts are hitting multiple platforms hard.


    I don't remember Hotel Del Luna being promoted to this extent, other than Character Instagram accounts, which was fairly new idea then.


    But I am enjoying these promotions.

    High budget dramas get the same promotion or even more, but I don't follow every Kdrama promotion, so...


    Hotel del Luna is an older show, and in 2019 they didn't promote Kdramas everywhere. Also, it wasn't a streaming show. This is mainly a Netflix thing. Disney barley promotes anything, just like VIKI.


    Nowadays, it's much easier because of SNS, and a lot of actors promoting their shows with Youtube creators, because it's cheaper and reach more people.

    True that. Indie Youtube shows have definitely boomed in the last 5 years or so.


    Still the "KBS2 Song Stage" was a fantastic choice for promotion.

    Just saw that the director had said that most of the budget was spent on production leaving little for promotions.

    That is probably a reason why IU & PBG are going the extra mile to promote on their own.


    And they have the contacts to do so, IU definitely straddles multiple Korean public spaces, and PBG is getting there with his music stints and now hosting the Seasons: Cantabile.

    While My Mister did prove IU's acting chops. The scope of the character did not have as many dimensions as this one does.

    Oh Aesun, has a far broader range of emotions and experiences to express and then IU also plays the daughter Geum-myeong with a different vibe.


    And she has so far, absolutely delivered to the perfection.


    Her filmography is thin compared to other idol-actresses like Suzy, Yoona etc., but she has figured out a way to pick top notch projects with massive scope for herself.

    Two episode interview, or more like craziness with IU, Bogum and Yoo Inna!


    Don't compete with IU, you're gonna lose! Also, she always in a baby mode when she's with Yoo Inna!😂

    You need a LOT, and I mean a LOOOOOOT of tissue for the latest 4 episodes, especially episode 6.


    I literally had to take 30 minute walk to calm down a bit. To be fair, I lost my grandma 2 weeks before Christmas, and this is the first time I can talk about this, so watching episode 6 was hard as hell.

    Yes, this drama brings the memories of those no longer with us and their stories a lot.


    A comment mentioned "That it makes them understand their parents a bit better" - True.


    RomCom hits come every year, but some dramas are going to be classics, and even more rare are dramas which are sure to be classics, even when they are airing.


    I thought my interest would flag, once they get into family life. But no.

    Baring perhaps one tragedy, most of the events in the drama are relatable in some way to the story of parents, grandparents etc


    So it is profound.

    Here's another watch-along with the parents and IU, but only watch it if you watched the latest 4 episodes!

    The series marks one of the greatest declines in quality I have witnessed. What began as a deeply engaging and heartbreaking life story turned into an overcomplicated mess.


    I would still recommend watching it, but suggest dropping it after the 4th episode.

    What? There's nothing overcomplicated in this story at all. Like, everything is simple and meaningful. It's pretty easy to understand.


    The show is about 3 generation, basically, so it's obviously not your average romcom with a cute storyline.
