Blocking someone on this site is so useless.

  • im sorry for ranting but i had to get this off my chest

    EDIT: added stuff

If I block someone, I don't want to interact with them and I don't want them to interact with me. I don't want anything to do with them at all.

It's quite the opposite for this site. Even if I block someone, they can still interact with anything I post and all it takes is a misclick or a bit of curiosity to see what they have to say.

Blocking someone on the akp main site works much better even if it still isn't the kind of blocking you can find on other sns. I can't interact with them just by clicking on their post that would be hidden if I blocked them. And its also kinda hard to navigate to your block list to unblock someone. But, I'd also like to take into consideration that the main site is more news oriented and less community oriented, so there would be less of a need for blocks and mutes.

The current system that I see here is more similar to muting someone so only you don't see them.

I understand the frustration, I do. During the original implementation of the block feature, we sadly ran into many odd scenarios with users and the current blocking method was chosen by the site owner as the best option of a compromise to where you can choose to not look at someone's posts or comments but also the other user cannot blatantly see that you blocked them and proceed to throw a tantrum.

However we do have conversations regularly about optimization of the site and where to find new things to make users feel more safe, like the rules update we had about 2 months ago. It is sadly a process of conversations before anything new is implemented to the site, so it does not happen instantly.

Edit: I am legitimately the weirdo that sticky notes feedback like this by the way, and like the IP addresses of kicked users and stuff so this will be going into the sticky notes <3

Thank you sm for understanding where I'm coming from <3

  • The current block system in place is also already customized to be stronger than what this current software offered to begin with :(. The system the main site uses vs the forum are vastly different - for instance, comment downvoting. I feel your pain like crystalblues , but we can't align the system without another major revamp.

This was exactly how the block system worked before modifications. Blocked content could still be seen and was only grayed out... I customized it to actually hide messages from people on your blocked list. Which I thought was an improvement, but the downside is that it sometimes makes it hard for the software to correctly update now because it's non-standard modification.

I see. I understand, it would be a lot of work that I don't want to pressure anyone to take on. I'm really sorry if my words came off as offensive; I didn't mean it in a harsh way. Seeing what you and crystalblues said, I'm also realizing that the system that's in place right now would solve many problems that a complete block system might cause. I think I'm coming from a place of, 'eliminate all evil so there's only happiness', but I'm definitely understanding the perspective of the people behind the site. At the end of the day, I'm fine with whatever the staff decide is best!

I wasn't offended at all. I can really only speak for myself, but I think anyone who values any level of peace would have wished for the same at one time or another.

Unfortunately, the truth is that there will always be someone looking for a fight and the anonymity the net offers everyone has given many the impression that they can be as toxic as they want with little repercussion. This may be changing little by little as you see big companies sue people for posting malicious comments, but if you're not a celebrity, there is little that will be done.

In many ways I don't even think they see their "opponent" as a person and thus lack empathy in their interactions. I often wonder if they act this way because they have been treated this way too, but two wrongs don't make a right.
