As the year draws to a close, the season of annual reviews has arrived, with broadcasters and ratings and media analysis agencies releasing their results. Among them, tvN’s Queen of Tears has been crowned “Drama of the Year.”
With just two weeks left until the end of the year, it seems unlikely that another drama will emerge to stage an upset, making it likely that Queen of Tears will dominate nearly all categories.
Queen of Tears Takes 1st Place
According to this year’s drama popularity survey conducted by TV and OTT media analysis agency Good Data Corporation, Queen of Tears, a story about the crisis and love of a married couple in their third year, ranked first.
The survey evaluated TV dramas aired from January 1 to December 8 (up to the first week of December). Popularity scores were calculated by analyzing reactions across various platforms, including news articles, blogs, YouTube, Twitter, and other social media platforms, as well as comments, views, and retweets.
Starring Kim Soohyun and Kim Jiwon, Queen of Tears tells the story of Hong Hae-in, the third-generation heir of the Queens Group conglomerate, and her life after marrying the son of a rural village chief in a lavish wedding.
The drama delighted audiences with its refreshing twist on the typical “prince on a white horse” cliché often found in romantic dramas.
The Power of Rom-Coms: Run Away with Seonjae and Mom’s Friend’s Son Also Popular
Following Queen of Tears in popularity were Lovelt Runner, Jeongnyeon, and Love Next Door, ranking 2nd to 4th respectively.
Lovely Runner, which aired as the follow-up to Queen of Tears, recorded average ratings in the 4% range. While its viewership ratings were not particularly high, it enjoyed popularity comparable to Queen of Tears thanks to its strong fanbase and media buzz.
The drama’s lead actor, Byun Wooseok, rose to top-star status, dominating numerous commercials and showcasing significant star power.
