Minors in the Idol Industry

  • Ultimately, Kpop is considered to be on the same level as Kids Music by South Koreans, largely due to Kpop Companies targeting teens and Koreans saying they grow out of it by College.

So it make sense that a Company would want to debut a person near the same age group as the fans they are marketing toward.

That does make sense why they would want to debut kids the same age (if their target are kids). I'm surprised that Kpop is considered on the same level as Kids Music because some Kpop songs are not kid friendly.

Then again in the US, there are a lot of non-kid friendly songs targeted towards kids.

their target age range is teenybopper to college age. teenyboppers will obviously nag their parents for the funds while high school and college students work part time to support their bias. A majority will grow out of kpop by the time they graduate.

  • Because minors aren't strictly necessary for singing but are thought to be necessary as actors for specific scenes in a show. (personally i think we could cast elderly as children, or perhaps just have movies pretend childhood isnt a thing and not represent it on camera but its not a widespread stance.)

I think the age of an idol can contribute to relatability. If the target audience are on the young teens, then wouldn't it be necessary or better for the idols to be around the same age? Genuine question!

I also think movies can go with older actors and just use make up/ a bit of cgi to portray kids. But then, it won't be relatable to the audience, no?

  • For me, it's less a concern about the effect that being an idol might have on a minor and more a concern about the credibility and ethics of the companies/people they're training and debuting with. I just don't trust the industry to not exploit them.

That's my concern too -- the companies and people can easily exploit kids. I just wish that there were more laws protecting minors.

  • what the point?

just dont do it, adults should work, not kids

its not difficult to say why it should not happen

but u need essays to said it should

I just want to open discussion and hear different perspectives! And I hope to hear more of your reasoning and perspective.

But for kids, they may not consider it work but something fun and a dream, no?
