Prosecutors Request Bang Si-hyuk, Chairman of Hive, as Witness for Kim Bum-soo's Trial for 'SM Stock Manipulation'

The prosecution has requested Bang Si-hyuk, chairman of Hive, as a witness in the trial of Kim Beom-soo, chairman of Kakao’s management reform committee, who was arrested and indicted on charges of manipulating SM Entertainment’s stock prices.

On the 16th, the Seoul Southern District Prosecutors’ Office (Chief Prosecutor Shin Eung-seok) announced at Chairman Kim’s trial, “We are requesting Chairman Bang as a witness in order to reveal SM’s stock price manipulation.”

Kakao Chairman Kim was arrested in February of last year on charges of manipulating stock prices worth 240 billion won to block a public offering of stocks by rival company Hive, and was then brought to trial.

The prosecution has reportedly summoned Hive Chairman Bang Si-hyuk several times during the investigation to appear as a witness, but Chairman Bang has never appeared.

A prosecution official explained, “Chairman Kim met with Chairman Bang during the stock price manipulation process, so he is an important witness in the trial.”

The court plans to review the prosecution’s request for a witness and decide whether to summon Chairman Bang.
