Are NorthStarBoys (or NBS) considered K-pop or are they just western boyband riding Kpop wave

  • I have never heard of them until recently. I always though they were just another K-pop group based on how they looked. I later discovered they sang in english and aren't associated with any K-pop company but I feel least half of their fans are related with Kpop but I could be wrong.

Though I'm surprised. They have like 1.6 million subs in youtube and 5.5 million followers in TikTok. They are a lot more popular than I though

  • never heard of them but this is what i found

North Star Boys (NSB) is a leading Asian-American creator group and pop band, founded in August 2021 by brothers Oliver Moy, and Sebastian Moy. Lacking Asian-American representation in the media growing up, NSB yearns to fill that void and inspire the younger generation of minorities and dreamers. Amassing over 55 million followers combined on social media platforms, NSB has cultivated a loyal audience. Their Fall 2022 tour is proof positive as they brought together thousands of fans, coined “Stars”, in North America and Asia.

NSB is kicking off a U.S. headline tour in March 2023 and will be debuting new music from their upcoming EP PANIC, featuring “Cold War”, co-produced by multi-platinum songwriters and musicians, Tim Pagnotta and Brian Phillips. The band has been hard at work honing their songwriting skills and fine-tuning their on-stage performances. The group is currently in collaboration with an array of producers and songwriters and plans to drop multiple EPs in 2023.

Along with thriving in social media and music, NSB has accumulated over 20 million monthly views on their syndicated Snapchat shows and plans to release 4 additional shows on the platform this year. Through their strong ties with the community and emphasis on culture, NSB will continue to expand their reach across various verticals by advancing their ongoing relationships with major fashion and lifestyle brands such as Calvin Klein, American Eagle, and BoohooMAN.

I have 0 interest in them *shrugs*

  • Oh, they're like Katseye?

I though they were Kpop or something like Vcha or Dream academy. I wasn't interested but I acknowledge they are successful, they tour all over U.S. If they are not Kpop affiliated than this would make them the first and most successful Asian american boyband.

  • it begs the question how are they connected to South Korea?

    are their members Korean?

    do they sing in Korean?

    were they trained in Korea?

    is their company Korean?

    are their producers Korean?

    do they promote in Korea?

    etc etc

  • it begs the question how are they connected to South Korea?

Yes your correct they are not Korean. They don't sing in Korean either but many Kpop members don't sing Korean or are even ethnic Korean. But we can confirmed yeah they never trained in Korea nor are their producer Korean

But they do talk a lot about Kpop, it's music, styles and what idols they like and people associate that with them.

  • I just found their Kpop profiles. Seems like they could be considered Kpop but american https://kprofiles.com/north-star-boys-members-profile/

with all due respect to kpop profiles

even the site says they are "North Star Boys is an Asian American content group." doesn't make them kpop

    "

of course my list isn't an exhaustive criteria but those are generally some of the indications whether someone is kpop or not...overall it's a combination of factors and with all due respect to the group (I do not doubt their talents or skills) but just because they talk about kpop they like kpop they mimic kpop like sounds or fandoms and the like still does not make them kpop per se (at least to me)

but overall the point is moot since I am but one person and my opinion doesn't carry a lot of weight and nor should it matter - if you personally think their are kpop great go for it who am I to say otherwise

  • I just found their Kpop profiles. Seems like they could be considered Kpop but american https://kprofiles.com/north-star-boys-members-profile/

I would call them "K-Pop adjacent" then perhaps? There is a clear influence and inspiration there, and they attract K-Pop fans but since nothing tangible connects them to the industry, I'd call them "adjacent".

It's just technicalities and we've seen with XG, Katseye and the like that the definition for K-Pop is malleable and keeps being debated over time.

They're an interesting group though, I'll check out their music!
