Radio Free Asia (RFA) about the recent controversy of members of the family of Hanni from NewJeans who are Vietnamese anti-communists. :

The singer was called for a boycott because of her origin with the Republic of Vietnam

The singer was called for a boycott because of his origin in the Republic of Vietnam 2023.02.08 Share on WhatsAppShare on WhatsApp The singer was called for a boycott because of his origin in the Republic of Vietnam Photo: RFA 00:00/09:06 Audio Download Audio The story of the Kbiz Vietnamese fan community simultaneously attacking and boycotting singer Hanni Pham exposes many worrying aspects that exist in Vietnamese society: that is education orientation, extreme nationalism to the possibility of national reconciliation...

Inspired by the boycott because of the origin of the Republic of Vietnam Hanni Pham, born in 2004, is an Australian with Vietnamese blood, currently a member of the Korean Idol group New Jeans. This singer is currently being strongly boycotted by the Vietnamese Kpop fan community because of her grandparents and parents who have the ideology of the Republic of Vietnam.

From February 6, on K-pop fan community forums in Vietnam such as K CRUSH DIVING with nearly 589,000 members, K Flower with more than 418,000 followers... all simultaneously posted articles about their origins, Hanni's lineage. The author traced all the Facebook accounts of Hanni's relatives, from grandparents, parents to relatives of this singer who had taken pictures under the yellow flag. From that, it is inferred that Hanni was raised in a family following the Republic of Vietnam, so he will be more or less affected.

These posts attract thousands of comments. The Vietnamese fan community, which is mostly students, thinks that Hanni's family belongs to the group of "reactionaries, three sticks, selling water" ... need to boycott this singer.

A Facebooker named Ngoc Anh, a student majoring in Korean language, living in Hanoi wrote on Facebook about this incident:

“It cannot be said that family does not influence her thoughts. Can Hanni turn her back on her whole family and express her political views? Surely you already have the answer

Don't take politics lightly. Uncle Ho once said: "Culture and art are also a front". Supporting a reactionary idol more or less contributes to the development of this ideology.”

A series of netizens also rushed to attack the Facebook page "Than Phong Dojo", this is a dojo founded by Hanni's grandfather in Australia.

The dojo's manager, who did not wish to be identified, told RFA that Hanni's parents are now off Facebook, and that he is not concerned with the attacks on the dojo's Fanpage:

“I think this is a bit of a mess. What someone does, that person will bear. Its descendants are now grown up, it has its own activities and activities, its own path to progress.

Now that I just take out old stories to crush, strangle, and bury talented people, I feel very sad for my country, for the Vietnamese people in general.

    " New generation "Red Guards"?

Commenting on this event, musician Tuan Khanh said that the frenzied reaction, using the crowd to shout, is the method of the "red guards" (the class of Chinese teenagers worshiped by the brainwashed communist party). Marxism-Lenin and Mao Zedong). They always demand that everyone they love submit to them, but there is no such exchange in this world:

“The attitude of crazy people thinking that when I like you you have to be my mental slave, but there are people who are much stronger. They wanted this singer to give up her family tradition, her roots to join their common pride. But that's poor to say, but really, that little girl is already proudly admired by millions of other people who don't need people who always fall for the political keyboard.

The sentimental value that is mixed with politics is always fragile and fragile like a stupid new girl in love." In the opinion of musician Tuan Khanh, that crowd is very poor, because they are only against those who cannot afford to fight them. Now they curse the people of the previous regime as "three sticks, selling water", but when the daughter of former Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung married the son of a government official in the Republic of Vietnam, no one said a word. at all.

Consequences of propaganda education? Khoa (required to name only), who came to the US to study in 11th grade and is currently working in the US, believes that these overreactions of young people today are caused by an educational system. propaganda and orientation from a young age, which he himself has experienced. Through his experience, Khoa said he felt the hostile attitude of young people in the country towards the young children of the Republic of Vietnam family, of which Hanni is a typical example. But in the opposite direction, he did not see the hatred of the Vietnamese group of young people in the US towards the young people who grew up in Communist families in the country.

“The main thing is still education by propaganda of the Vietnamese government. If they don't conceal, tell the full truth, there may still be disagreements, but not such intense hatred. This generation of people (USA - PV) also heard about their father's hatred, but they were not affected much, but they were more open. The second and third generations of children and grandchildren do not have to receive one-way propaganda education, so they have a relatively more open and sympathetic view of Vietnam.

    Extreme nationalism?

A K-pop fan who asked to use the nickname Yun commented to RFA via email that this phenomenon of collective attack (throwing, witch hunt) does not only appear in the K-pop fan community. If we look back at previous events that have spread on social networks, from COVID patient number 19 to controversies related to bread, football, etc., the "patriotic" element has been abused to lead and public opinion orientation. Anyone can participate in this behavior, no matter how educated they are. Extreme nationalism is used quite methodically by public opinion and pro-state groups to guide the actions of internet users.

Elements such as "patriotism", "Fatherland", "national heroes", "sacrifice", "we (the righteous side) with them (the rebel faction)" ... are used as materials. for online contests and evoke strong emotions from information recipients. Combined with the propaganda system that has been exposed from elementary school to university, it is not difficult for young people to associate these appeals with their patriotism.

So, I'm not directing all my criticism at the students, but more importantly, at the groups behind such online battles. If you look more closely, you will see that this system of commentators and volunteers has a lot of entertainment, drama, study, hobby clubs, movies and will often mobilize when there are events. , controversy (even by themselves creating conflicts) in society.

The general formula is that they call for personal information hunting, disinformation, reporting dissenting posts and accounts, and the use of hate speech to dehumanize, make the target audience. are not seen as equal human beings, but as another "species", deserving to be excluded from society.

This agitation and division ultimately serves the political purposes of the managers, making their role important and meaningful in ensuring the peace of society. National reconciliation is increasingly fragile In the past, when it came to national reconciliation, people often thought that the subjects of reconciliation were people of the generation born and raised in war.

However, through this event, Mr. Khoa said that with the propaganda system oriented by the Vietnamese state, hatred for the Republic of Vietnam regime, "Puyed army, puppet power" ... was deeply ingrained in the subconscious of Vietnamese people. majority of Vietnamese youth. Therefore, Khoa commented that the possibility of reconciliation between the two sides is increasingly fragile: “In order to reconcile, both sides must have goodwill.

However, greater goodwill is required from the side that hurts the other. At first, I thought about this, I wanted national reconciliation, but now I feel more and more difficult about this now, Now with this second generation, even though they haven't gone through the war now, they have absorbed the propaganda guise quite heavily." According to musician Tuan Khanh, "Harmony-reconciliation" is a policy of the Vietnamese state. However, nowadays there are many words but not much action. It is like a shirt to deal with the government's times. Once they really want that, they will force all classes to wear modest reconciliation clothes for synchronization. Then all kinds of aggressive patriotic play like the story mentioned above will also fade.
