UK Supreme Court rules the Scottish Government can't hold a referendum with UK Government consent (Should Scotland be a independent country?)

  • If you have been keeping tabs on UK politics especially Scottish politics in general, Scot Gov has been trying to get another independence referendum going. If Scottish voters voted yes, Scotland would be independent and not part of the UK anymore

They had one in 2014, the voters voted no

However one of the biggest arguments for the no camp then was that Scotland would lose membership to the EU

    And now look what happened

    Brexit

Scotland voted no on Brexit but because of the UK majority they were forced to leave it.

This along with other Conservative government shenanigans made the Scot Gov recently try to have another independence vote, but since it's a reserved matter (Scottish Government can't rule on certain things since it's not a full fledged government as part of the UK) they need to ask UK government for permission to have one (like in 2014). Otherwise it would if been illegal and void

The Scot Gov made a case to the UK Supreme Court to see of they can do it without Westminster approval, last month were arguments and this morning the judgement

    Basically it boils down to:

It's a reserved matter, you can't have one.

Scot Gov is obviously disappointed, so they are trying to see if they can get a pro independence majority in the next uk election

Next election will be independence vote - Nicola Sturgeon
The SNP leader says she will use the next general election as an attempt to show a majority support for independence.

So I end in a question. Scotland in the UK is facing problems, but if they leave they face a whole new set of problems.

Should Scotland be a independent country?

  • uhhh I'm not Scottish or familiar with the socio-political climate, so I don't feel right saying what they should or should not do. I'm just hoping that you know, the public can get what they want and all.

  • Should Scotland be a independent country?

I understand that you have an interesting in UK politics/history but to me the question isn't should Scotland be one but rather CAN it be an independent country?

since it would seem that the UK laws regarding independence and such prevent Scottland from unilaterally deciding to have such a vote without the approval of the UK Gov...

this to me sounds like an example of a state/province who wishes to leave the main union and create a separate independent sovereign state and to my memory the last country to that was Sudan/South Sudan and that was the end result of a long war

  • Im from England and if they want to they can but SNP need to be real with whats going to happen. There will be austerity, massive dept problems, currency issues they need to make that clear.

Also the arguments they use are the same ones Brexiters used the only difference is the effect of them leaving would be much worse then the effect Brexit had.

They currently have a 9 billion black hole and are spend way more then they generate thanks to the rest of the UK propping them up.
