Movies like Ringu(The Ring), The Grudge, Dark Water, Battle Royal, Dark Water, Confession, One Missed Call, Audition were very similar to korean movies today with strong acting performance, heartbreaking plot and twists. Shoplifters 2018 shows they can do Cannes-Oscar worthy movies again.
J-Horror/Thriller during the late 90's to early 2000's were as good as Kmovies today or even better

At least when it comes to horror. I watched my fair share of k-horror back in the days and nothing tops the works of Hideo Nakata or Takashi Shimizu.
