Why are 4th gen ggs seen as only “trendy” (meaning a trend that will pass away) but other ggs weren’t when they were smashing in their biggest years?

Because the new wave of girl groups is coming off very very strong. Even bigger than 2018's releases.

I mean, LS, Newjeans, Ive, G-idle. All of them having smashing hits at the same time is almost ridiculouss.

Because Twice and Blackpink had a long string of hits across multiple years. Maybe people were calling Twice trendy in 2016. Which would be true. But by 2018, they were a mainstay.

Nobody can talk about the groups you mentioned long term, but it's obvious that some get ahead of themselves when a song smashes. These groups are still establishing themselves.

Well technically they were right. Twice on the charts have flopped massively over the last 3 years. Almost every single gg including nugus can out chart them.
