  • I think it has to do more with talent rather than censorship.


    Many Chinese choose to enroll in STEM-related education in order to get their families out of poverty. They end up leaving the country, causing a brain drain.


    This is why China has more soft power during the Xi administration than the Hu administration despite the former having much more censorship.

  • It's a shame that China's soft power cannot thrive under Xi's extreme leftist policies/crackdowns. However it's important to note that China is still very much a developing nation with a GDP per capita of only $10k and will face a looming demographic crisis with a rapidly ageing workforce. The last thing the CCP want is their youth hooked on 'cool' things like idols, anime and video games which will further dent their slowing export based economy. They don't want to become 'the next Japan.'
