It’s fine to use kpop to describe the industry but to use it as an official genre category is weird. Kpop just means it’s made in the idol industry, it doesn’t say anything about the genre of the song at all! As an example: how can you say that IU and Stray kids are in the same category? It should be mandatory to use proper genre descriptions to describe kpop songs as well…
Kpop shouldn’t be an official genre category

Correct.
Kpop is a location based industry, like Hollywood. There are multiple genres used by it, but by itself it is not a 'genre'.
Pop - "popular" music is itself vague as a genre, because it does not have any distinctive traits, but borrows from all genres.
The other option is go with Kpop is idol music (ideul gayo?), then question would be what defines an idol?
That also is challenging
- Groups? - then are Sunmi, Taeyeon or now Jhope, Nayeon solos make them non-idols?
- Visual performance aspect? - then most B-sides of all idols don't have a visual performance aspect to it - that would be the majority of Kpop
- the idol recruitment/training process pioneered by LSM?, - maybe, but now idols are coming from other avenues too, like TV shows or social media
So at the end of the day, it is highly 'mass perception' and very little hard definitions.
