Peaceful colors and the epitome of 2D
    Fairy tales for adults
OSTs with deep feelings made by Hisaishi JOe

    original post: here

    1. Ghibli. Maybe because culture-wise, we're close, I relate more to it. For Western shows, I liked Coco the mostㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ It was more my styleㅠㅠ

    2. Ghibli... First of all, their stories are so deep to the point you get flabbergasted by them

    3. I feel like the balance would be better if you compared Ghibli to Pixar

    4. Ghibli... You can't forget Ghibli's unique vibeㅠㅠ

    5. Ghibli!! But maybe I'll start liking Disney more in 10 years. After Miyazaki, I feel like everyone is falling short from him at Ghibliㅠㅠ

    6. Straight up Ghibli... Their workmanship is far better and their OSTs are just crazy..ㅠㅠ Even though the way they barely promote is problematic..

    7. Disney... But actually, my favorite is Pixar

    8. Ghibli. First of all, they have handsome male characters

    9. You can't beat Ghibli's vibe.... And I prefer old Disney movies more

    10. Ghibli is a wall. Whether it's character design or stories..

  • Disney's style of storytelling resonates with more, but that can be because I'm a westerner and western vs. eastern storytelling is different.

That doesn't make either better than the other. It comes down to preference, and execution ofc varies.

One trait that differs between the styles is how it explains things and the world. I feel like with western stories they feel the need to explain why things work the way they do in worldbuilding while in eastern storytelling, they don't feel like they need to spend time on that and focus on other things.

Another thing is that pacing is different. Eastern storytelling can have a lot of quiet moments with the character. This allows the viewer to think about what's happened in the story and digest it. Meanwhile, western stories want to fill the plot and progress to one point to the next more quickly, leaving room for less pause. It's not a bad thing since that can make for a very entertaining story, but those quiet moments can also serve to make the story more impactful.

At least, you can see these differences in Disney and Ghibli movies. Obviously calling one thing Eastern and another Western is very broad. And there is more nuance than that given how many stories are out there.

Usually, I'd prefer to watch Disney movies. Could be nostalgia, the music, or that I'm more used to the style but I've grown to appreciate Ghibli. They have the most interesting worldbuilding and you can really get lost in the worlds. Spirited Away is an all time favorite of mine.

  • I have noticed it too with the western vs eastern fairytale

To generalize western fairy tales are plot driven, eastern ones are character driven

  • disney doesnt even make original material why tf is this even a contest

all popular disney movies are direct retellings or heavily influenced from classic tales

in fact, i read a lot of fairy tales as a kid, including some really dark ones and they were all so much thought inducing than braindead disney versions

Disney marshmallowed alot of European folktales

I find it super cringy when people think those Disney stories are original

The little mermaid og ending was so much bettterrrrr

ive never read the little mermaid story cause frankly i was never quite into love stories

but i remember the one fairy tale about elves who make shoes or whatever that really struck me as a kid

wonder why disney never took that one

they only go for the most generic stereotypical love stories

oh and why tf did they never do Christmas Carol

  • Oh little mermaid is more of cautionary tale than love story

In the og version the guy never recognizes her and she burst into bubbles and just dying

a lot of the classic fairytales have very ominous topics

even aladdin was FAR more complicated than the stupid movie

i hate disney with a passion
