I’m not sure but that really is a problem in Kpop though, people be like “gidle has the best charting song by a gg this year” and I’m like NO it’s the best charting song in Korea by ANYONE

As iconic as Sm is, their acts were simply not popular in the west compared to other companies.

Yg had psy and his hit to be the 1st ww hit to ever do it, 21, bb and bp in 3rd gen who is the blueprint for them now;

jyp had rain, wonder girls and their first korean bb hot 100 top 10 entry to ever do it

and ofc bts were the first kpop group that snatched the rarest jewel of all, "first eva to do it" card before sm. Which is why soo man was salty and talked about how his acts like Boa debuted there first paved the way for the rest or something.

So they created aespa for this and will milk it till the end even if their popularity and "firsts" are artificial. They want that western clout mediaplay too.

Their mediaplay weren’t like this before cmiiw. YG was the mediaplay machine. I still remember the mediaplay back then like Big Bang vs. TVXQ Japan concert comparisons, 2ne1 vs. SNSD and GD - Dakota Fanning. SM is just playing catch up with their western promotions.
