I have noticed there's some confusion and missunderstandnings regarding how the hot 100 hit system works both here and over on twitter..
i've seen many tweets about Love wins all and Spot being the only two songs to get roof hit this year (not true, 10 songs have gotten roof hit so far this year) and also Spot being hours away from beating Love wins all in number of roof hits, which most users seems to think is 19 hours, but it actually has over 600 hours of roof hits in total - 19 hits is the number of hours in one 24h period
First, HOT 100 roof hit does not work like the old realtime chart roof hit system, the "roof" threshold is lower beacuse its based on the hot 100 chart which only contains 100 songs that are not older than 100 days, which makes it much easier to reach compared to the old system. To hit the "roof", a song needs a 6% share of the unique listeners for any given hour on the Hot 100 chart.
The lower threshold also means its not uncommon for 2-3 songs to get roof hit at the same time. This happened this year with love wins all/to x, Love wins/shopper/holssi, love wins all/plot twist, love wins all/bamb yang gang/plot twist, Plot Twist/Bam yang gang/fate - all which managed to get a roof hit in the same day and hour of the day.
I think most of the confusion comes from a few screenshots going around from the melon app which indicates the number of roof hits with a counter, like these:
pasted-from-clipboard.pngThe listed number from the melon app on the graph is based on the last 24 hour period, not the sum total number of roof hits achived by a song. This means that, accounting for the zombie hours that are not counted (five hours in total 2-6am) 19 hours is the maximum possible amount to reach in a 24 hour span, and the counter on the melon app can never go above 19 hours as it only tracks and shows the number of roof hits in the last 24 hour period. Thats why the the graph for Spot went from showing 16 hits to 15 hits two hours in a row for 9 and 10 pm.
There's also no site or chart account from what i've been able to find that accurately keeps track of the total number of roof hits for songs (based on hot100). Im guessing it's because its fairly common with roof hits now and also just kinda of tedious to keep track on them as there's no sum counter on the melon app nor does guysome keep track of it, so it has to be tallied up by hand by going through day by day and count every hour thats above the threshold on guysome (also even many of the chart accounts doesnt seem to know how it actually works)
Out of pure boredom and time to waste, i've gone through every day of 2024 so far:
In conclusion
* Getting a roof hit on hot 100 is fairly common and something most songs that hit #1 will manage, even songs that never hit #1 can get roof hits
* It's a metric that doesnt say much overall and not that useful to do comparisions with as its very dependant on timing
