LMFAO wowww you are dense af. Your utterly lack of reading comprehension is honestly quite pathetic. Find me where anyone said anything about “owning their entire music catalog”. Is the voice in your head acting up again?

Frankly, none of us know about the contracts made behind closed doors, how much the company paid, or how much the artist paid for. You optimistically think that the members may have protected their rights. I approach the matter more cautiously, thinking that anything can be expected from an entertainment company. Although they have a family image, the only bond between BTS members and Big Hit is a contract. This should never be forgotten.
But we do know a lot of details behind doors. Have you read the Harvard case study (2020) on BigHit? They gave great insights about what went into contract renewal between BTS and BH, especially firsthand details about how the members negotiated. I’m providing an opinion after considering many pieces of information we do know (primary academic research), as well industry trends that have been broken by BH/BTS (shareholder options, master rights, non commercial releases). Skepticism is fine, but you need to be reasonable when there is legitimate and interesting information available.

To be honest, I don't really think BTS can do what even Taylor couldn't do. Big Hit is very careful about this and is very careful about getting everything right under their name. No songs recorded in their stage names belong to them. Even BTS's name doesn't belong to BTS.
Did you read the article? Taylor signed an unfair contract when she was 15. All of her output is commercially published and funded by her label.
In BTS case, there is a clear distinction in music produced under their stage name and music produced in their free time. Owners of master recordings usually fund the production of the projects which is why record labels are usually the main beneficiary. We do know BTS members fund many parts of their solo work themselves.
Anyway this is all speculation on my part. I do think it suspicious that Bh logo is missing in all of mixtape MVs. With my knowledge of TS court case, I speculate a more progressive arrangement between BH and BTS.

Maybe I'm wrong, but as far as I know, the rights of the mixtapes belong to Big Hit too. It appears in details when you go to the page.
External Content soundcloud.comContent embedded from external sources will not be displayed without your consent.Through the activation of external content, you agree that personal data may be transferred to third party platforms. We have provided more information on this in our privacy policy.Master rights is different from publishing rights. You normally can’t tell who owns the master because it commonly written in private contracts, rather than public knowledge. You can read about the debate between master vs copyright license here in Taylor Swift’s case: https://blog.discmakers.com/20…%20video%20games%2C%20etc.
BH likely owns the publishing rights for now, but BTS members might actually own the master rights instead, which means they can take the music with them where ever they go in the future.

im kind of confused what your point is? like no1 is denying they're making money? or saying that they shouldnt? but its a fact that all of their mixtape releases are still free and without a physical component. and that is something purposeful on the part of the members and the company. Even having it on a streaming platform like spotify constitutes as it being ~free~ bc you can use spotify with or without a premium account. i think putting the tracks on itunes is what rlly changed the game but its more telling that their mixtapes are not on the korean streaming sites . what that other user mentioned about them feeling burdened by commercial success is likely very true.
Agree with you. I have no idea what is “funny” to the OP or what exactly BTS fans are pretending??? What is the OP trying to drag here????
Anyways, a side note I have been thinking. You all know how Taylor Swift has been in a legal battle with her old label for the masters of her entire discography right? In the music industry, the record labels usually own the masters of the music instead of the artist. Then, I noticed that all BTS mixtape MVs do not have Big Hit logo at the beginning. Also we have heard snippets about BTS members themselves funding many parts of the projects (such as JHope paying the original artist $5m license fee to use CNS). All of this makes me think that BTS members own the masters of all of their solo work, mixtape and SoundCloud independent releases. If this is true, it is very progressive and a great step forward for the music industry. Kudos to BTS and BH.

you're right and you should say it
That's not really true. The first two mixtapes were classic mixtapes in the sense that they used samples. But by HW, the pretense of a true mixtape was gone and they could therefore monetize it which they did, immediately lol. I consider HW to be the first real solo EP by one of the members and now all of rapline have them, since mono and D-2 have come out. I think since HW they have meant to chart, otherwise they wouldn't release them on paid and streaming platforms. The only place they've kept them off streaming is in Korea for some odd reason.
And Joon's mixtapes also charted on billboard, even RM1 charted on the world albums with no availability on streaming sites
BTS fans have kind of been sold on this whole idea of BTS giving away free music and they do, but only on soundcloud. Anything released on spotify and other streaming platforms is monetized as it should be. Nothing as good as the rapline mixtapes deserve to be treated like handouts, when BTS promotes the hell out of crap like Make it Right
I agree that the members seem to make some distinction, and i think it's just bc they can have the pretense of not looking at things commercially, even though Suga has said that he's always thinking of commercial charting success with his songs.
Suga also dropped D-2 as a zip file on Dropbox that you can download.
Just because you make something not intended for commercial success doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the little bit of income it can generates for you. People sell their arts and crafts on Etsy for the same reason.
