do you think ateez can still return to the top3 4th gen bgs?

Who listens to ateez music? Reminds me of nct and seventeen in that aspect (despite them being more popular)

They are known for their members more than the music

  • Ateez is still doing pretty well for themselves imo but it's a bit competitive so I can't see it happening.

  • I hope so, but it looks like they got stuck in their own image and sound while other bgs keep evolving. They need a 360 either in concept or music

  • do you think that could alienate fans?

Honestly, no. Most groups do much better and increase fandom once they switch concept/music. Just look at the most popular songs of kpop groups, and its usually total opposites. Red Velvet with Red Flavor and Psycho, BTS with Blood Sweet Tears and Dynamite, EXO with Monster and Growl. Now look at a group that took longer to reinvent themselves *cof cof* Twice, and look what I mean. People get tired of the same stuff all the time. Even outside of kpop, the most popular artists switch between silly and more serious content.

As a fan of a group that suffered from the same problem as Ateez, Monsta X, i can guarantee that their most popular eras were Dramarama that was completely different in concept and sound from their usual stuff (and it earned their first win) and Shoot Out that was far more aggressive and darker than their content that was already pretty aggressive.

Trust me, change always attract attention, especially if the old formula stopped working.

If you pay attention to groups that are struggling, you can see that most of them didnt reinvent themselves and are stuck on a loop of the same old stuff. In my opinion Itzy, Ateez, Dreamcatcher and a few others all share the same problem. I know as a fan its not pleasant to read that, I also used to say that my faves shouldnt change their sound to please anyone, but truth is, it works and even fans will be happy once the change happen if its good enough.

What would you say about Blackpink?

This is a very well thought out reply. I like your perspective.

The most successful artists of every generation are always the ones that evolve their sound over the years. It doesn't have to be a complete 180 from your usual sound but concepts have to change as you grow as an artist.

Looking at artists like Ariana grande, Taylor swift and justin Bieber it holds true for them. Their debut songs are vastly different from their lastest releases yet they managed to grow their audience over the years.

If we look at kpop the best example is bts. Their debut era is so different from their current era because they evolved. If they were making the same music as they were back in 2015 they wouldn't be where they are today (as much as some fans wish for their old music back it wouldn't be received as well by most of the fandom or gp).

Blackpink is saved from this a bit because their discography is so tiny that you can't make many judgements on their sound. People already complain about the sameness of their songs as it is. But I can assure you, if they had a regular comeback schedule of 2 a year, their sound would have become very stale very fast. I feel they would have performed similar to Itzy in trajectory (obviously not as bad though.)

  • To keep on topic, I don't think Ateez will catch up. Their music is very distinct but also not that popular with people. I feel this limits their growth and popularity. All the top 4th gen boy groups already have a hit song among the kpop community by now but not them.

They sell a lot but their comebacks and songs are met with indifference by a lot of people.

  • What would you say about Blackpink?

Blackpink comebacks are well done and even if their concept is similar the music is different every time and they have the "advantage" of comeback once a year or more so it always feel fresh. Their debut year had completely all different songs from each other though, with Stay, Whistle, Boombayah and Playing with Fire and made them huge in little time. Ice Cream and LSG were their most forgettable songs because in all honesty the music just sucked (my opinion). Change doesnt matter if the change is for the worst.

Thank you, I agree with pretty much everything you said. Even in rock and other genre you can see the same still is true.
