    What do you mean by modern? Ok, the experience in my country:


    Anime started to get popular here during the 90's and declined a bit during the late 00's and early 10's mainly because TV's were no longer transmitting them and DVDs were expensive, it was an era of strong piracy


    Things started to change around 2015 I think, when streaming got stronger and mangas finally got published again.
