How did Shindong debut?

I don't want to sound mean but how did he manage to not only get into sm but debut as well? I'm new to kpop so maybe I missed some past discourse on this. It's just the elephant in the room to me since I see no one questioning this.

He is not exactly the type to be debuted by a kpop company let alone sm who are well known for their obsession with perfect idols. Not that he is ugly but his visuals and more importantly his weight are the furthest from the industry standard.

I remember him mentioning in an interview that he got casted because of his ''variety skills''.

I think they said Suju was originally a graduation type group and they had different skills required. Shinding said his entertainment skills got him into the initial line up but then they became a permanent group and obviously he debuted as a full member

and about his weight in fact SM tried to make him lose weight, but he said that considering that the they were not good diet, all the weight he was losing, he gain it back faster till the point that Sm give up on make him diet

people focus on his weight too much to notice that he is actually a great dancer too, he's part of suju dance line plus like others said he has entertainment skills.

Thats kind of a dumb question, SM is known for debuting an outcast once in a while, I give the company credit of doing that more often than any other company (for better or worse)

Everyone always claims SM only cares about visuals and then makes fun of Shindong (and Amber and Key) for debuting in SM. Like do you want it to be a visual obsessed industry or not?

I wasn't trying to get anyone to bash him. I genuinely wanted an answer.

Super Junior were initially an experimental group, a project group which allowed them and SM to try and do things differently. They ended up being so successful that Super Junior became a permanent group.

Shindong got selected, despite his looks, because of his talents. He was great at variety and (creating) choreography.

It's ironic, that while YG stans and JYP stans and kpop fans of other groups were shouting the loudest that SM only cares about visuals and not talent, they completely ignored people like Shindong and Amber, who were nothing like regular idols and also in looks and type (an obese idol and a tomboy) nowhere to be seen in the other idol groups around: people that were so obviously not chosen for their looks, but for their talents.

sm is literally known for having the most talented artists lol

Shindong was a street dancer before joining sm, he had a dance crew and he still works with them for TV performances and special events. He also has a very appealing vocal tone and is a decent singer and rapper.
