Why has Kpop become more “safe” even though it’s more international?

  • Back in the previous gens, idols free interact across genders and groups, groups like Big Bang/2 Pm… have songs about “taboo” topics like sex, drugs. Top even kiss a girl on a collab stage. Even girl groups have plenty of sexy concepts. Now that 4th gen is here, Kpop is more exposed in America and way more global, and we all know the Western audience are very open to mature topics of sex, drugs,… and Western audience seem more mature about fanwars yet Kpop seems to even become “safer”? Groups don’t even react to each other in award shows, very few boy group/girl group collabs, few groups doing sexy/mature concept. Shouldn’t 4th gen, with more exposure to Western audience, be more free? Idols freely dating, smoking, being friends with each other, singing about whatever they want?
