When I was an adolescent I was obsessed with MTV and music videos so I started to learn and assemble several words and phrases by that, and later by having English classes at school
I still need a proper learning tho, but for conversations and basic things I think I can handle well
On the internet. Reading, listening, watching, memorizing and copying.
I think at first mainly from cartoons when I was little. And later watching English shows, surfing the internet. Even later from reading english books, especially for uni.
I had English at school as a second foreign language, but I think this was mostly just a 'support' to what I've learned outside of school.
I've never interracted much with English speakers, because there were none around me.
I'm speaking English only when traveling or if it's needed for work.
I was also never active on any online community until this year (thanks Covid).
On the internet mostly, although classes in school helped with grammar too
Started reading manga in English and I usually used Google Translate to translate words I didn't know. That helped me become more active in the English class at school, lol. And in my last year of high school I took private English lessons since I wanted to pursue a degree in English language and literature.
In school and with the help of tv shows
English classes + plenty of hours watching videos with English subtitles and YouTube channels in English.
I always say that Kpop taught me English lol
I've told this story before
When I came to Australia at 7 I spoke no English except gameboy since my parents had just gotten me one (yes the grey original one) and when they went to enrol me in school the administration staff went he can't speak english and he'll have to go to a special language school which was miles away and my parents couldn't and didn't want to send me there because it was too far and they had limited means of transport and other stuff
so the headmaster said that they would give me three months to learn english otherwise I would have to go there no matter what - my parents agreed
then everyday my headmaster would take me out of normal classes and teach me one on one using flash cards with english words on one side and a picture on the other and at night my parents would assist...I learned English in one month
and to this day I still remember his name - Mr Henderson
