Why does Lee Jung Hyun have more stage presence than entire kpop groups today?

  • If you don't k ow this legendary soloist then I feel really bad for your soul.

The greatest debut in kpop history.

Even Brave Girls covered it recently.

  • Comparing the performances I think that Lee Jung hyun also uses a LOT of power behind each note.

Brave Girls seem to sing as prescribed by the sheet music. Its not bad but it lacks the sort of unrefined power vibe that JungHyun put out in her performance.

That kind of freedom to somewhat improvise a performance is what separates these two eras.

If your interested in her hes another of my favorite performances. The whole thing just feels like shes winging it and it's so cool compared to todays strict by the book choreography and performances.

There IS something to be said about Natural Charisma VS practiced routines.

Routines can have charisma programmed into it but having it naturally kinda means its always there.

--It also means that a sort of winging it is successful and maybe even better

She's really cool and I wish someone would just make a company and let the artist do their own thing tbh...

P-nation's the closest so far in my opinion.

Edit: I love the freedom that that era had -- kinda reminds me of Kris Phillips just straight up doing gyrating hips on Chinese national television -- the cameramen had to zoom in all the way to his face to keep them hips out of the picture. I forgot which year but at that time that was too much for the censors at the time.

Is it really improvised though? The performance doesn't sound like it was actually sung live.

That being said, "Wa" remains one of my favourite K-pop songs of all time.

Well you can tell that it's all about fun and not serious. If she wanted to improvise a few times it wouldn't be that big of deal.

Nowadays kpop is so serious and if you go off script or mess up a dance move you will get eaten alive by fans and your company.

Yes, I agree with your general sentiment.

I'll also point out that Lee Jung-hyun still has the craziest stage costumes I've ever seen on a music show. Just look at the performance below. It's been over 20 years, and I don't think I've encountered a more outlandish outfit.

And if that wasn't enough, she starts her performance by descending to the stage from the ceiling using wires. I can't imagine seeing that happen on a modern music show.
