It seems the days of year end shows are ending too

  • The lineups of various sundry award shows and the year end shows have weakened significantly.

The year end shows in Korea, a copy of Japan's Kohaku show (there are a couple other year end shows there), started in 1965.

At that time there were only two, from MBC and KBS, since there were only 3 stations (the other one, TBC, was owned by Samsung and abolished by the military govt in 1980 because the dictator at that time thought there were too many stations. It was later revived as JTBC)

Now, there are simply too many year end shows, and I ceased to keep track of all of them so I don't know how many are there.

Worse, the best known acts do not usually appear. If they ever appear, they only do so in one show, and pass the other ones.

also virtually all year end shows are conducted the same way - a bunch of nugus filling the time, and the better known acts show up in sporadic times so the viewers have to endure a bunch of nugus to see their faves for a few minutes.

And the clips of their faves will be in streaming sites in no time.

I think the days of year end shows are ending - it is much more profitable to have some show out of the country.

It is because of companies having to promote their newer idols, and they think the better established idols have to show up in such shows so the younger idols do not get penalized (for example, because of the beef between Hybe and MBC, New Jeans did not show up in MBC's Music core until July 2024 , when the MHJ circus was at its height)

However , as the major stations get increasingly less relevant, I think the year end shows will probably be replaced by some kind of trot shows and has been idol shows reminiscing about their past in a couple of years, as the companies more and more realize it is not worth showing up on major stations which are getting less relevant every day.
