Do you know what "Monster Rookie" actually means originally?

The term "Monster Rookie" was a title earned by the most talented new groups or soloists. I think the first Monster Rookie group was Shinee. The only soloist who were called Monster Rookie I remember is Son Seung-yeon.

Since 3rd gen the term changed completely, and now it's about "Charts, Sales, Overseas and overall popularity, and now it's overused.

So, my question is: Which version should be used today?
